Aurel (Treen) Mooney
April 20, 1932 – January 7, 2025
Mooney, Aurel Lucille – 92 of Yarmouth, NS, passed away Tuesday, January 7, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. With the passing of Aurel, Yarmouth has lost a strong voice, dedicated community leader and selfless volunteer who dedicated her life to serving others. Her commitment to her community was only overshadowed by her love and pride for her family.
Born and raised in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Aurel embraced life in Yarmouth, becoming not only the wife of William (Bill) Mooney, but his true partner in business, family and community advocacy. She was somewhat of a pioneer for women working in the pharmacy business in Nova Scotia. She worked side-by-side with her husband as a certified pharmacy clerk at Mooney’s Drug Store and later Shoppers Drug Mart, and of course she minded the store while Bill was off doing other things, like serving as Mayor of Yarmouth.
She helped sustain the pharmacy program at Yarmouth Regional Hospital for many years, and during times when it was a challenge to lure pharmacy professionals away from the private sector. Aurel Mooney was the first woman president of the Pharmacy Association of Nova Scotia (PANS), and served on its first elected board of directors. Her years of service to the profession were celebrated when PANS awarded Aurel the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.
Aurel’s commitment to her community led her to be elected three times as a Councilor for the Municipality of Yarmouth from 1992 to 2004. Her ongoing work on behalf of innumerable committees, boards and organizations resulted in her being recognized as Volunteer of the Year for the Municipality in Yarmouth in 2012.
Aurel was never afraid to stand up and speak out in a time when the views of strong women were not necessarily embraced. She had a razor-sharp memory, especially on family matters, and was a wonderful conversationalist. She was a considerate listener with a genuine interest in the well being of everyone she spoke with. A chat with Aurel almost always included an enlightening piece of local history (with relevant names and dates included), sincere questions about your family and an update on the goings on of her own children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. This would be followed by some thoughtful, and useful advice along with her unmistakable laugh.
She was fiercely proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandkids. She served as unofficial chauffer to countless sporting events, tournaments and activities for her family, and was never one to shy from rolling up her sleeves and pitching in for the team. She was a coach for hockey and swim, and also served as a swimming timekeeper. Like many Mooneys, she was no stranger to the basketball court as well.
Aurel was a role model for many, especially young women and held various leadership positions in the Girl Guides for over 40 years. She served as president of the Catholic Women’s League of Yarmouth and was very active in the Yarmouth IODE-Leif Erikson Chapter, having served as president.
She never slowed down, and served as Chair of the Yarmouth County Home Care Support Association for many years. Her deep appreciation for local heritage led her to serve as President of Yarmouth County Historical Society, and she continued to volunteer and lend her vast knowledge of history in the Archives.
Aurel was predeceased by her husband William (Bill) in 1984, son David (Kathleen) in 2011, and daughter Karen (Emery) in 2016.
She is survived by children Lynda Willey (Norman), Bill Mooney (Theresa), Patti d’Entremont (Weldon), Beth Wood (Laurie), and Leslie Dixon (Trevor), as well as her sister Marilyn Farrow. She was the proud grandmother to 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grand kids and two great-great grand kids.
Special thanks to her dear friend Ann Moses as well as Dr. Philip Cooper, the VON, and the staff of Huskilsons Funeral Home.
A visitation will be held on Monday, January 13th at 10:00 a.m., with a service at 11:00 a.m., in Huskilson’s Funeral Chapel, Yarmouth. Burial to follow in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Forest Street.
