Art passed peacefully in his 95th year. Son of the late William Best and Emily Priestly. Dear brother to the late Joan Daniels, Dorothy Kent and William (Billy) Best. Where they lived a mile from his beloved Leeds United Football team’s grounds.
Loving father to Stewart, Stephen (Vicki), Brenda (the late Ray), Ian (Eugene) and Eric (the late Roland) During WW2, with his Dad away serving in Burma, he delivered food on his bike for a local butcher, where he learned his trade as Trainee Butcher.
Art spent weekends cycling all over Yorkshire; Ilkley Moor and Scarborough were his favorite places to travel to.
Sailing from Liverpool with pals to Canada in 1952. He travelled around and found work at a Logging Camp, then later travelled to Toronto about 1953-4 Where he met the love of his life – an English girl from Bath, Sylvia Louise Roberts (1934-1993) and in 1955 they married and had their 5 children in Scarborough.
Art worked as a butcher at the A&P (Metro) at Kennedy Road in Scarborough, retiring after many years there.
Art and Sylvia were both very involved in Scouts Canada, both being leaders in Scouts and Cubs for many years.
Art was a gentle soul who loved to fish. He enjoyed “a beverage” with many friends, especially with long time friend Ed Day and his late neighbours, Norm Tyrell & Ernie Rodrigues.
Art’s 6 grandchildren Fiona, Diane, Nikki, Bill, Shelby and Haley will miss their grandad, who always made sure they had “pocket money” each time they visited.
Art was proud of his 12 Great grandchildren, Tyler, Paige, Lexi, Kylie, Hailey, Hanna, Mya, Ethan, Ashton, Lily, Joshua, Kaitlyn.
And 4 great great grandchildren Tucker, Mason, Emma, Lila.
Dad left a loving legacy of friends and family, Gwen Duffley being a dear lady in his life in his later years.
Art will be remembered for being a kind, loving father, father in law, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather and friend. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed, and dearly loved by many.
