Arthur (Art) Grenville Obituary
GRENVILLE,
Arthur (Art) Harry
August 23, 1949 – December 28, 2024
It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Arthur (Art) Harry Grenville. Art passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2024 in Drumheller Hospital. He was a beloved husband, father, “Papa”, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.
He was the eldest child of his predeceased mother Marjorie and father Douglas.
He is survived by his wife Kandice, sons Richard (Laurie) and Christopher (Meredith), and grandchildren Hannah and Nolan Grenville and, Burke and Sloane Grenville, sister Sylvia Neill (Brian) and brother Bob Grenville (Sandra), as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was born in Drumheller and raised on the family farm near Morrin. Growing up he attended Morrin School where he completed Grade 9, and then attended High School in Drumheller. After High School graduation, Art began farming east of Morrin. As a farmer he grew grain and raised cattle, later diversifying into bison. The bison herd became a fixture on Highway 9 east of the Morrin Corner. He began offering Bison tours to interested visitors, friends, and locals.
Art had a very gentle heart, and will be remembered for generosity and welcoming visitors into their home for a chat and a coffee.
Community was always very important to Art. He was the Municipal Councillor for Division 3 in Starland County for many years and served as Reeve and Deputy Reeve during his time on council. His favourite comment of his council days was, ” We just tried to do good, and we all still talk to each other today.” Art also sat on the Morrin Ag Society Board, Morrin Community Hall and, Starland and District Recreation Board.
Art enjoyed participating in sport, primarily fastball and was well known for his pitching skills on the Morrin Giants Ball Team. He spent many winters curling in local bonspiels. Teammates and friends would recall his competitiveness but also enjoyed his sense of humor and sense of fun! Once his sons got old enough to play ball he focused on coaching and developing their interest in baseball. He enjoyed watching and cheering his sons on whenever they participated in sports. He was a proud father. In his most recent senior years, he experienced much enjoyment watching his two older grandchildren play ball and his grandson play hockey.
Grandchildren were everything to “Papa”. These last few years as he battled health issues he strived to be present for their birthdays or just to have a visit, play a game or take them for a quad ride.
A celebration of life, honouring Art, will be held in the summer.
