Obituary of Anthony Cordeel Thomas
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Anthony Cordeel Thomas, 64, of Riverton, who passed at home on Friday, February 28, 2025, following a valiant five-year battle with heart disease.
Born in East Preston, he was the son of the late William “Bobby” and Lavinia Hilda “Vinnie” (Glasgow) Thomas. Anthony’s life was defined by service, faith, and community. After graduating from high school, he briefly served with the Canadian Army Reserve in Halifax before moving to Bridgwater, where he worked at Michelin Tire for eight years. In 1988, he graduated from the Atlantic Police Academy at Holland College, marking the beginning of his career in law enforcement. He initially worked as an Animal Control Officer in Halifax, later accepting a posting in Louisbourg where he served as Acting Chief for several months before joining the New Glasgow Police Department in 1990, where he dedicated 30 years of service, earning the Exemplary Medal (2009), Medal of Bravery (2013) and Nova Scotia Long Service Police Medal (2016), retiring in 2020.
Known for his quiet strength, Anthony was always thoughtful with his words, speaking only when it mattered, and when he did, his words were impactful and meaningful. His life was a testament to generosity—he gave selflessly and accepted kindness with a warm, gracious heart. His integrity and sense of duty were reflected both in his professional life and in his interactions with others. On December 9, 2011, Anthony was honored with the Governor General’s Exemplary Service Medal, a reflection of his dedication to serving others and his relentless effort to improve the community he cherished.
Anthony was natural entrepreneur, deeply committed to giving back in various ways, always ready to help his neighbors. His legacy lives on through the countless acts of kindness and service he offered throughout his life.
His devotion to his family was equally remarkable. Despite the challenges of raising six children, Anthony instilled in them the values of hard work, compassion, and responsibility, imparting the principles that guided his own life. His children will forever carry with them the lessons of integrity, love, and kindness that were shown to them by the example he set.
A passionate Boston Bruins fan and a talented hockey player, Anthony was affectionately known as “Freight Train Thomas” in the local gentlemen’s hockey league and PANS hockey games. However, it was his faith, family, and community that were his greatest passions. Above all, Anthony cherished his love for his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. His unwavering faith and devotion to his family brought him peace, knowing that his Lord had given him the promise of eternal life.
