Obituary of Ann Maureen O’Keefe
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ann (Nana) O’Keefe, who passed away peacefully on February 28th, 2025, at the age of 88. Born to Francis Lanigan and Annie Hodgin, Ann was the second youngest of 12 children. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Frank (Papa) O’Keefe, and all of her siblings. Ann was so proud and humbled by her Irish heritage, and she beamed as she told the story of her father’s immigration from Waterford, Ireland.
Ann is survived by her loving daughters, Patti (Donald) Darling and Leanne Thorne, and her cherished grandchildren: Darrian, David, Daniel, Mariah, Meghan, and Liam. A lifelong Saint Johner, Ann’s heart was always devoted to her family, her community, and her passions.
Ann found her calling in teaching, having attended Teacher’s College and beginning her career at Saint John The Baptist, where she dedicated herself to educating generations of students. Family was at the core of Ann’s life. Together with Frank, they created a home where their daughters, Patti and Leanne, thrived. Ann’s love for her children was unmatched, and it was in these early years that “Nana School” began, with flashcards, practice sessions, and endless care. Ann’s deep love of literature and reading was evident in the way she fostered a lifelong passion for books in her family, encouraging all those around her to seek knowledge and joy through reading.
Ann was our biggest cheerleader, always ready to drag her children and grandchildren to any extracurricular activity they were involved in. Whether it was soccer games, music recitals, ballet performances, or any other passion, Ann was there, fully invested, cheering on her loved ones with all the energy and enthusiasm she had.
Ann cherished traditions that brought joy to her family, especially the ones that made holidays unforgettable. Celebrating her birthday on Christmas Eve with a festive meal of spaghetti, decorating for every occasion with love and creativity, and sitting around the table telling stories and sharing laughter are memories that will forever be treasured. These moments were the heart of family gatherings, and they will continue to inspire warmth and joy in the hearts of all who knew her. Ann also believed that everything could be solved with a good cup of tea, a sentiment that brought comfort to so many who shared a cup with her.
The greatest joy of Ann’s life was her grandchildren. Nana School reopened for each of them, with Ann and Frank offering guidance, love, and endless support. Their lives were forever shaped by the devotion and care of their Nana and Papa.
Ann was committed to many causes: her family, friends, church, community, and even good causes that led to a protest now and then. Her passionate spirit and dedication to those she loved will never be forgotten.
Visitation will be held at Brenan’s Paradise Row on Monday, March 3rd, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, March 4th, at 10:00 AM at Holy Redeemer Church, Somerset Street, with a reception to follow.
