Annie Fitzgerald Obituary
With broken hearts, we, her children, announce the passing of our mother, Annie Mae, on Sunday, December 1st, at Northside General Hospital. The daughter of the late August and Florence (Boutilier) Roland of Mill Creek was age 86.
Our mom meant so much to so many. She was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was a force of nature, small in stature, with a heart and spirit larger than life. She was a giant, a storyteller, a teller of jokes (sometimes dirty), a practical joker, a fantastic cook, and a baker. She was well-known in our neighborhood and many others for her tea biscuits and pies. Family meant everything to Mom.
She was in her element, either hosting or attending gatherings, surrounded by family, friends, food, and music, and she usually was the last one standing. Mom was a tireless worker, working many various jobs and spending her later working years at the post office delivering mail with her sister Eileen by her side. She was spontaneous, game for anything, had a great sense of adventure, loving nothing more than loading the van for a camping or fishing trip. She was kind, compassionate, unassuming, funny, a little bit stubborn, and much loved by everyone who knew her. The world, especially our world, lost a very special light.
Left behind to mourn this amazing woman are her children, daughters Irene and Rosella (Peter), her sons Rob (Marlene) and Winston, as well as her daughter-in-law Nancy. Her seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, including her youngest great-granddaughter Madison Anne, who face-timed her “Gran Gran” every day. Also left to mourn her are her brother George David (Helen), close friends Virginia and Roseanne, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mom was predeceased by her beloved husband Winston Scotty, her son Alex, her sisters, Eileen (Brian deceased), Marie (Survine deceased), and brothers Wes (Irene deceased) and Wendell (Helen deceased) and brother in childhood Claude Wilson.
We would very much like to send a very heartfelt thank you to the doctors and nurses on 4 West at Northside General Hospital for their compassion and care during Mom’s illness and passing. To Dr. Wawer, Dr. Ignacio, Dr. Wambolt, Dr. Ritter, the volunteers, and staff with palliative care, we thank you. A special thank you to Dr. Paul Hickey (now retired) and Dr. Phil Smith for a lifetime of care and compassion for many illnesses and health challenges. Thank you to VON nurses Marlene and Sheri, who took amazing care of Mom and became like family to all of us.
Cremation has taken place, as per Annie Mae’s wishes. There will be no visitation. There will be a funeral service at St Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or, on Saturday, Dec 7th, at 10:30, with a reception to follow at Bras d’Or Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to palliative care or a charity of choice.
