On Wednesday evening, January 22nd, 2025, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, God called Anne Elizabeth Sheward, age 51, of McKay Section, Hants County, to her eternal home. Born in Yarmouth, on April 11, 1973, she was the daughter of the late Elsie (Caldwell) and Kenneth Sheward.
Anne will be greatly missed by her dad, Ken, Avondale and brother, Mark Sheward (Karen), Burlington, ON. She will also be missed by her aunts and uncles, Frances Boutilier, Bridgewater; Donald (Brigitte) Caldwell, Lambton, QC; Edward (Sally) Caldwell, Calgary, AB; Claude (Lynn) Caldwell, Valley; Catherine Caldwell, South Rawdon and Curtis (Kathy) Caldwell, Toronto, ON; as well as many cousins.
Besides her mom, Anne was predeceased by her grandparents, Roy and Vera Caldwell (McKay Section) and Rev. Arthur and Elizabeth Sheward (Upper Sackville).
Anne`s early education began at Ian Forsythe Elementary School in Dartmouth and she was a graduate of Queen Elizabeth Park High School in Oakville, ON. Post-secondary education was at University of Waterloo where she graduated with a B.A.
In high school, Anne participated in the music program and played the flute in the QEP Marching Band and Concert Band under the direction of the music teacher Don Singular. This was the start of her seriously following her passion for music.
After graduating from the University of Waterloo and her time at Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP in Toronto, Anne, in her own words, “escaped from her exile in Ontario” and returned to Nova Scotia. She first settled in Mount Uniacke and in 2013 moved into her maternal grandparents (Roy and Vera Caldwell) home in McKay Section, Hants County.
Anne`s working career was as a legal assistant at Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP, Toronto; Stewart McKelvey, Halifax and Evangeline Law, Windsor. She thoroughly enjoyed working in the legal field, but her true love was music.
Anne was a long-time, active member of the Four Seasons Community Orchestra under the direction of Roger Taylor. Under his guidance and tutelage, Anne played her flute and was in the process of learning the oboe and saxophone. She also took on the responsibilities of librarian and other administrative tasks for the FSCO. Over the years, she found time to also participate under the direction of Maggie Helms with The North Mountain Concert Band, NKEC Senior Concert Band and the New Horizons Concert Band. Anne was also a valued musician at the Avondale and Newport United Churches for many years.
Anne loved her cats and over her life had many furry friends. Adara, Yoda and Orion are missing her terribly but will be moving to Dad’s to share his home with her family dog, Pal. Anne was a faithful supporter of 9-Lives Cat Rescue Society and was always ready to assist with transportation when needed.
Always ready and willing to give back to the community, Anne was the Treasurer for the Avondale United Church and Newport Pastoral Charge. In addition, she was Treasurer and Board Member for the Riverview Haven Cemetery in Brooklyn.
A special thank you to all the staff at the Emergency Department of Valley Regional Hospital and Dr. Heisler, Dr. Clark and Dr. Burch and family doctor, Dr. Spencer, at the Avon Medical Clinic, who provided excellent care of Anne.
Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Windsor. There will be a Celebration of Anne’s Life, at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 15 in Avondale United Church, 89 Avondale Cross Road, Avondale, Hants County, followed by a reception at the Belmont Community Hall, 1090 Belmont Road, Belmont, Hants County. A private family interment will be held in the spring. Family flowers only by request. Donations in memory of Anne can be made to 9-Lives Cat Rescue Society, PO Box 125, Falmouth, NS B0P 1L0; Avondale United Church, PO Box 9, Newport, NS B0N 2A0 (avondaleunitedchurch.newportpc@gmail.com) or a charity of your choice.
