Anne Rebalkin
février 16, 1923 — février 27, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Anne Rebalkin on February 27, 2025, at the Cozy Nest Care Home, near Saskatoon, SK at the age of 102 years.
Anne was predeceased by her parents Alex and Nellie Postnikoff, her husband Peter, her daughter Crystal, and her four sisters Helen Postnikoff, Mary Woykin, Marjorie Markin, and Mabel Zaitsoff.
Anne will be deeply missed by her daughters Marcella (Ellard) Ratzlaff of Edmonton and Nadine (Reagan) Penner of Saskatoon, her son Harvey (Sherri) Rebalkin of Winnipeg, her grandchildren Erika Ratzlaff (Mike), Ingrid Hoogenboom (Kyle), and Scott Rebalkin, and great-grandsons Jasper, Zion, and Eli.
Anne was born on the farm at Langham, SK on February 16, 1923, the youngest of five girls. Growing up she loved the farm, especially looking to find wild strawberries and wildflowers. As a child she spoke Russian at home and didn’t know a word of English until she started school at nearby Lynne School. She spoke fluently in both languages throughout her life. Anne loved animals, especially the cows, and gave them all Russian names. Elianna, the most mischievous one, was her favorite.
By watching her sisters, Anne learned to knit, crochet, sew and use the spinning wheel. She sewed all her own clothes using ideas she got from the Sears and Eaton’s catalogues. As a child, Anne was brought up in the Doukhobor faith and never lost those roots throughout her life.
In 1947, Anne married Peter Rebalkin and moved to his farm near Langham. They later moved to Ceepee, SK where Peter ran the National Grain Elevator. Several years later Anne and Peter moved to Saskatoon. During this time of her life, Anne enjoyed raising her family, gardening, tending to flowers in her front and back yards, and worshipping at Westgate Alliance Church. She also loved camping trips with her family and friends.
In 1992, Anne lost her husband, and shortly thereafter moved into Elim Lodge, a residence for seniors in Saskatoon. She started attending the Elim Church which was located near the Lodge. She quickly made new friends at Elim Lodge and was an important part of the activities there including Keenagers and Extended Hands. She even had a part-time job in the Elim dining room serving suppers to residents. Anne loved to travel. In addition to visiting her children and grandchildren, she went on a number of bus trips with tour groups. She especially enjoyed traveling to Florida, the Black Hills, and the Maritime Provinces.
Anne’s suite at Elim Lodge had a balcony where she enjoyed growing flowers and some vegetables and herbs. At 80 years of age she learned to use the computer to search the internet, email, and text message, and continued to text regularly with her children and relatives well into her 90’s. Anne developed a passion for painting on canvas with oil paints and watercolors. She watched artists on the Learning Channel and learned how to mix paints and develop painting techniques. Her favorite paintings were of landscapes, flowers, birds and animals, and always had her paintings on display in her suite and in the hallway outside her door.
Anne enjoyed 33 years of good health and living independently at Elim Lodge. At almost 100 years of age, Anne realized she required more care and moved to a selection of private care homes in Saskatoon. The family is extremely grateful for the caring support she received from Elim Lodge, The Palisades Intermediate Care Home, Warm ‘n’ Cozy Care Home, and Cozy Nest Care Home.
Anne will be remembered as a loving, friendly, and thoughtful woman. She was sweet and generous, and would brighten your day with her smile. Anne was a praying woman with a deep faith in God. She was loved and will be missed by many.
Funeral Service will take place at 11:00 am on Friday March 14, 2025, at the Saskatoon Funeral Home, 338 4th Ave. North, Saskatoon, SK. Lunch will follow the service. Interment will follow at the Kirilowka Cemetery, near Langham.
