Anne Mullen (nee Durand) died Sunday 30 March serenely and surrounded by love and gratitude in her 101st year at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Palliative Care Unit where she been since November. She is survived by her children Tom and Michelle and her much beloved son-in-law and grandchildren. Anne was the last of 10 amazing siblings who remained fiercely close throughout their lives and never ceased to enjoy connection through music, great food and some degree of tomfoolery. She leaves a multitude of nieces and nephews (and grands) and many dear friends from varied walks and stages of life.
Anne lived a lot of history in her century: born in the roaring 20’s, growing up through the Great Depression and WWII she moved into adulthood in the post war period and enjoyed a rich working life as an exceptional civil servant. This included her time at Chalk River nuclear – then Canada’s top secret project – and in the Ontario Ministry of Education.
All she encountered were met with her love and forbearance. Anne brought her wit, prodigious memory and unfailing work ethic to every part of her life: professional, volunteer and most importantly, her service to family, friends and community. She delighted in children and was never without a pocketed treat for canine acquaintances.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the team at Sunnybrook for exemplary care and to her friends AnnMarie and Nancy who filled her last weeks with much love and laughter.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Parish, 24 Cheritan Avenue Toronto on Thursday 3 April; visitation from 10 am, Mass at 1030. In lieu of flowers, any donation to St. Francis Table Toronto (capuchinoutreach.org) or charity of your choice in her memory is received with gratitude. Interment will be at a later date at Our Lady of the Snows, by the Ottawa river and with her beloved parents. She will finally rest ‘at home’.
