Anne McIntyre passed away peacefully in Squamish, BC on January 6th, 2025. She was 77 years old.
Anne was born in Saint John, New Brunswick to parents Audrey and Maurice McIntyre and elder sister Kathy. She grew up with a love for music, swims in the ocean, and practical jokes. She studied music and education at Dalhousie and Mount Allison University, making many lifelong friends and living for a time with her sister and brother-in-law in Labrador.
Moving “out west” to Edmonton, Alberta in 1971, Anne worked as an elementary school teacher and met her first husband, Fred Kozak, playing tennis. They travelled together extensively and welcomed daughter Laura Kozak in 1982. Her nephews Alex and Marc and niece Maggie all spent time with her in Edmonton.
In 1993 she married Brian Chatterton, father of Nicole and Phillip, her devoted partner of over 30 years. Their time together included many trips to Kerry, Ireland, cups of tea and a shared love of classical music. In 2015, they moved to Squamish, BC, where she spent happy days outdoors with her young grandchildren. She was gifted at making friends wherever she went and maintained strong ties to people in the Maritimes, Edmonton, Squamish, and Kerry. Brian remained steadfastly by her side throughout the transitions of living with Alzheimer’s.
Beginning with the Belgravia Children’s Choir in the 1980s, Anne contributed significantly to the choral community in Edmonton throughout her career. She shared her passion for music and love of children’s voices with countless families in the Edmonton area, founding the Edmonton Children’s Choir and working in many different capacities as a music teacher, choral conductor and adjudicator. She formed friendships and collaborations spanning decades with musicians including Ruth Mossop, Ardelle Ries, Scott Leithead, and Sheila Wright. In 2009 she was recognized by Choir Alberta with a Richard S. Eaton Award of Distinction.
Anne will be remembered for her laughter and sense of fun, joy in music and devotion to her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her husband Brian, daughter Laura (James), grandchildren Ida and Walter, the “coffee girls” and many other friends, neighbours, colleagues and extended family. A celebration of life will be held in Edmonton, Alberta in the spring of 2025.
