Anne Catherine Abes Obituary
Anne Catherine Abes passed away peacefully at her home on December 25, 2024.
Anne was born in Sheffield, England on February 27, 1965, to Margaret Batty and Anthony Atherley. She earned an Honours Degree in Economics from the University College London in Bloomsbury, central London, England, before moving to Canada in the late 80s. She worked as an IT Project Manager for National Grocers, where she met her husband, Alberto. They married on May 25, 1997, and soon became parents to three children and, later on, four dogs.
Anne was incredibly multi-talented and creative: she enjoyed home renovation and interior decorating, listening to music, going to concerts, drawing, photography, sewing clothes and costumes, and more. Her favourite place in the world was her home, and she rarely said no to a hot (not warm) cup of tea.
She is survived by her husband, Alberto, and their three children, Catherine, Joseph, and Michael, and by her brother, Mark. She is preceded in death by her mother, from whom she inherited her creativity and supportive nature; her father, who inspired her academic brilliance; and beloved Shiloh Shepherd dogs, Kola, MC, Grissom, and Angie.
Anne and Kola, a certified therapy dog, volunteered with Therapeutic Paws of Canada for several years, bringing comfort to people in senior homes, hospitals, community centres, and more, and training and certifying new therapy dogs to do the same. Anne and Kola also dedicated many hours to the Paws to Read program at public libraries in Milton and Acton, creating a calm, non-judgemental space where children who struggled with reading could read a story to Kola (with Anne always happy to help sound out tricky words), building confidence and joy.
Anne will be remembered for her incredible resilience and resolve. She was first diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in December 2005 but endeavoured to give her kids a normal childhood full of love and magic, making every birthday and holiday special, never missing a dance recital, school concert, or graduation, and always being available to give sound advice for problems big and small—even when her kids grew up, she and Alberto reassured them they could always call, and come home if they needed to. She approached life with pragmatism, compassion, and wit, making her family laugh even in her final days.
In accordance with her wishes, Anne has been cremated. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation or Covenant House Toronto.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the nurses and personal support workers from Halton Homecare for providing exceptional daily caregiving to Anne over the past months.
