Alida Jane Berube (Smith) – “Janie”
September 1, 1943 – March 14, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alida Jane Berube, affectionately known as Janie, on March 14, 2025, at Health Sciences North in Sudbury, Ontario. Born on September 1, 1943, in Capreol, Ontario, Janie was the beloved daughter of Evelyn Adelia Dunn and Elmer Rutledge Smith. She was 81 years old.
Janie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She leaves behind her loving and devoted husband of many years, Raymond, and her only son, David (Helene). She was the proud grandmother of Eric (Brooke), Julie (Jonathan), Melodie (Roxanne), and Natalie (Trevor), and the doting great-grandmother of Briar, Deven, and Abbey. Janie was also a cherished sister to Clayton (predeceased), Abbie (predeceased), and Isabelle (predeceased). She was a beloved great-aunt and great-great-aunt, and her love and warmth extended to all her family members, whom she cherished deeply.
Janie was a pillar of her community, known for her radiant smile, her gift of conversation, and her genuine care for others. If you let her, she could talk your ear off, but her words were always filled with kindness and joy. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel seen and valued, and her presence brought happiness to all who knew her.
For 32 dedicated years, Janie worked at the CNR Office as a clerk in Capreol, where she took great pride in her work and ensured that “her boys” at the railroad were always treated fairly. After her retirement, she continued to serve her community by volunteering at the Capreol Legion, where she contributed her skills as a bookkeeper and clerical worker.
Janie had a passion for life and enjoyed watching and playing curling, following sports of all kinds, and reading lifestyle and gossip magazines. She also cherished her summers spent on Manitoulin Island, where she enjoyed the peace and beauty of her trailer, creating countless memories with family and friends. She was a proud supporter of her community and took joy in the simple pleasures of life.
A visitation will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Lougheed Funeral Home in Hanmer. A short service will take place on Saturday, March 22, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the same location, followed by burial at the Capreol Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Janie’s memory to the Health Science North Foundation (Northern Cancer Foundation) or the Canadian Legion Capreol Branch. These causes were close to her heart, and your contributions will honor her legacy of care and community service.
Janie’s kindness, laughter, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. As we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched.
“Those we love don’t go away; they walk beside us every day.”
