Obituary of Alena Gertrude (Miles) Giovannetti, Port Morien
It is with great love and cherished memories that we announce the passing of Alena Gertrude (Miles) Giovannetti at the remarkable age of 101 at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay. Alena passed away peacefully on February 9, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of adventure, resilience, and warmth.
Born in Port Morien, Alena was a woman ahead of her time: fearless, independent, intelligent, and full of life. Her adventurous spirit led her to proudly serve in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, a chapter of her life that she carried with great pride and honour. Alena was a life-member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 55, Port Morien. She also had the honour of being the first female Legion president in Canadian history.
Alena had an insatiable love for travel, always seeking new places to explore and new cultures to experience. Whether it was a distant country or a road trip closer to home, she embraced each journey with open arms and a sense of wonder. At the age of 85, she travelled to New Zealand, Australia, and New Caledonia. During that trip she had adventures that most people would never experience, such as cave crawling.
A woman of many talents, Alena was an avid bowler, fierce card player, and someone who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether she was strategizing her next move in a game of canasta, rolling a perfect strike, reminiscing over a well-played hand of 45s, or reciting the alphabet backwards, she brought laughter and camaraderie to all. She also took great pride in telling everyone that the doctor said she was “disgustingly healthy.” Turns out that the doctor was right.
As a devoted wife and mother, Alena shared a lifetime of love and companionship, building a home filled with warmth, kindness, and cherished memories.
Alena leaves behind her children, Sherry (John), Gary, Eric, David (Susan), Judy (Jim), Tricia (Réal), Lynn (Terry), Anita, Jennifer (Bob), and Joy (Scott). She was predeceased by her husband John and son Clem.
She will be missed by her 25 grandchildren and her many great and great great grandchildren.
Alena’s bright spirit, quick wit, and unwavering strength will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of sharing her journey.
Though she is no longer with us, her love of adventure, passion for life, and the memories she created will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
Visitation is Thursday evening, February 13th from 7-9 pm in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.
The funeral service will be held on Friday morning at 11 am in the funeral home chapel with a reception to follow. Fr. Norman MacPhee presiding. Cremation to follow with interment in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Blackbrook at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please honour her memory by taking a trip, playing a game of cards, or simply embracing life with the same joy and enthusiasm that she did.

Fair winds and blue skies, Alena—may your next adventure be as extraordinary as the life you lived.
God has been so good to me.
