Obituary of Albert “Putter” George Zillman, Dominion
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, and Great Great Grandfather Albert “Putter” George Zillman on Monday, March 3RD, 2025 at the age of 97 just short of his 98th birthday. He was surrounded by his loving family at the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born and raised in Dominion, Albert was the dear son of the late John and Viola (Roth) Zillman.
He is predeceased by his loving wife of 78 years, Lois (Wilson), and his sister Louise, and his brothers Frederick, John and Alfred “Bunny”.
Albert’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his two daughters Marguerite (Frank) Santone of Ontario, and Anne (Valley) Facchin of Dominion who he always loved and appreciated.
He was the proud and true Papa to his Grandchildren Jena (Jason) Peori of Nova Scotia, Sean (Jenny) Peori of Nova Scotia, Derek (Cheryl) Facchin of Dominion, Nicole (Joel) Flores of Ontario; Great Grandchildren Erica (Owen) Power, Tyler Facchin, Molly & Rowan McCoy, Sydney Hohlweg, Shaniece MacLeod, Cannon MacLeod, Magnolia Peori, and his sweet Great Great Grandson Emmett Power. Not to mention Gia, Luna, Louie, and Enzo, his furry Four-legged Grandchildren.
Over the years, he held a number of jobs including those at the Sydney Steel Plant, the Robin Hood Flour factory in Toronto, Mitchell’s General Store as a meat cutter, and even the first Pool Hall in his hometown of Dominion, which he owned and operated. But he was best known for his job with Modern City Dairy as “The Milkman”. Albert is still an honorary member of the Dominion Community Hawks Club, where his photo hangs on the wall. He was one of the club’s original founders. He also belonged to the Lions Club in his younger years. Family and friends could always come over to Albert and Lois’s house to enjoy a hot cup of tea or whatever Lois was cooking.
They traveled in their trailer for countless hours before settling into the Bungalow, their home away from home in the heart of Margaree. In 2010, Albert’s lifelong dream of visiting Europe to learn more about the origins of his parents was realized. Although Albert was always busy and hard working, he especially loved spending time with his family, visiting relatives in Ontario and Newfoundland, and caring for his flower and vegetable gardens. He was a jack of all trades and could fix anything that was broken. Albert loved fishing in Margaree and had been a longtime member of a Highlands snowmobile club.
As an honorary member of the Reserve Pensioners club, he played darts there and consistently took home the “Gentleman of the Year” award. He was, if anything, the most giving and compassionate person his family had ever met.
The family would like to express their gratitude to his longtime physician, Dr. Michael Gallivan, as well as the physicians and staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit. He was described as “a breath of fresh air” by Dr. Gallivan and will be sadly missed by his loved ones. RIP Papa.
Visitation is Thursday, March 6th from 6-8 pm in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. The funeral service is Friday, March 7th at 1 p.m. in Warden United Church, Glace Bay followed by a reception. Rev. Bob Biggar presiding. Interment at a later date in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
