Albert Armstrong Obituary
Passed away peacefully at Chapman House on Monday, March 17, 2025. Born on the family farm in Arthur Township on June 22, 1927, Albert “Bert” Langdon Armstrong of Owen Sound was in his 98th year. That Bert left this world on St. Patrick’s Day seems fitting, given the pride he took in his Irish roots.
Beloved husband for 33 years of Betty Armstrong (nee Newstead, formerly McRuer) of Owen Sound. Loving father of John (Cynthia), Jane (Les Whittington), Nancy (Bill Turvill), and step-father of Kathryn (Don Harloff), Janet (Acacio Azevedo), Sandra (Brett Johnson) and Neil McRuer (Maria). Cherished grandpa of Matthew, Margot, Elizabeth, Claire, Nicholas, Bobby, Charles, John, Konrad, Gregory, Mark and Mackenzie, their partners and spouses, and seven great grandchildren. Bert will also be missed and remembered fondly by numerous nieces, nephews, colleagues, neighbours and friends.
Predeceased by his parents Albert and Alice Armstrong (nee Langdon), and by his dear sisters Verda, Helen and Dorothy.
Bert was the youngest of four children and the only son. He attended the University of Toronto College of Pharmacy, graduating in 1950. After several years of practice in Guelph, Bert purchased Mr. Prast’s drugstore on Owen Sound’s main street in 1959, where the Frog Pond now stands. In 1966, he assumed ownership of what was then Roland’s Pharmacy beside city hall, serving the community for over 20 more years. Armstrong Pharmacy later changed hands to Big V and eventually the downtown Shopper’s Drug Mart.
Bert was especially grateful in his final years for the love and support he received from Angela and Jennifer.
In keeping with Bert’s wishes, cremation is taking place. Friends are invited to a come and go memorial visitation at Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, 250 14th St. W., Owen Sound, 519-376-7492, on Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
