Abe and his twin brother Jacob were born on the homestead in Horndean, Manitoba, on April 1, 1935. After completing high school in Winkler, Abe moved to Winnipeg where he attended Normal School and attained his teaching certificate.
In spring of 1960 Abe was introduced to Lee by her classmate from the Misericordia General Hospital School of Nursing. Lee wanted to attend the Nurses Christian Fellowship Banquet and was looking for a date that was tall enough so that she could wear high heels and not be taller than her date. A blind date was set up just prior to the banquet and the relationship flourished. Abe and Lee were married on July 20, 1962.
Abe continued his studies evenings and summers, earning a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education and an Advanced Certificate in Education. Abe spent the majority of his career teaching elementary school in Winnipeg School Division No.1 as well as short periods in Hutterian Schools, Churchill and the Yukon. Following his retirement, Abe continued substitute teaching for an additional ten years.
Upon the profession of his faith in Jesus Christ, Abe was baptized on June 6, 1965. Throughout life, he lived out his servant heart by volunteering his time, energy and talents at the North Kildonan Mennonite Church teaching Sunday School, serving on Church Council and as a deacon. Abe also visited incarcerated adults with the Open Circle ministry.
Baseball, swimming, badminton, camping, fishing and gardening were just some of the activities Abe enjoyed to stay active. Countless memories were made on many family road trips and vacations. In 1978 / 1979 Abe took on the challenge of general contracting the next family home. Things did not go quite as planned and so the family moved into an unfinished basement while the rest of the home was being finished. Determined to learn from their first experience of general contracting, Abe and Lee built a cottage at West Hawk Lake. Many summers and retirement were spent at the cottage. Here Abe spent his days puttering in the boat house, fishing and tending the daisies in the yard. When the children and grandchildren came to stay, Abe and Lee would treat them to homemade waffles with white sauce and bacon. The grandchildren also enjoyed the paddle boat rides, tubing and boating with Opa and Oma.
Abe will be remembered as a loving husband, dad, Opa, Uropa, and Onkel who sent up endless prayers for our safety and wellbeing. We love you so very much and will miss you.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the North Kildonan Mennonite Church, 1131 Roch St., Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).
