“Forever changed but still whole”
After a life filled with love, laughter, and surrounded by those who loved her most, Catharine (Cathy) Reko peacefully reunited with her parents Charles and Mildred, and eldest sister Ellen, on September 25, 2025 to complete their foursome for the eternal Euchre tournament.
Cathy’s body could no longer handle the multiple myelomas that invaded but her stubbornness prevailed; waiting until visiting with her friends, family and grandchildren to say their final goodbyes before being released from her burden.
Known for her maternal advice and contagious smile, Cathy was a solace to many of her children’s friends who needed a hug, meal, place to stay (short or extended) or even rides to their dental appointments. Cathy was a safe place for many stray animals (that ended up finding a great homes right where they were found) and neighborhood children who often came for pool parties, grilled cheese and her homemade Caesar salad. Her generosity was unmatched and Cathy was always willing to ensure everyone else had what they needed before worrying about herself, even until the very end. Cathy was the constant cheering section at all her children’s sporting events and was always willing to volunteer at their schools and was renown for her holiday cakes.
She leaves behind her devoted husband of 45 years Andrew Paul, her adoring children Katherine (Dan), Christine, and Andrew (Ashleigh) and the grandchildren she loved more than the world itself: Alexus, Angela, Aubree, Hunter, Hudson, Averie and Olivia. Her surviving sister, Susan and brothers Peter and George will carry on the Wheatley legacy playing pass the ace and knowing that there will now be extra hearts stacked in the deckCathys nieces, nephews, brother and sister-in-laws, extended family and friends have left lasting impressions on Cathy’s life. She left this world knowing she was loved by many and her memory will not be forgotten.
A celebration of life will occur on Saturday November 1st, 2025 from 11-4. All are welcome to share their stories, well wishes and condolences at The Canadian Legion Hall, 9 Tollgate Road, Brantford. Please bring your appetites, as Cathy would want you to come hungry and leave with the leftovers!
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Stedman Community Hospice in Brantford or Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton.
A special thanks goes to the Doctors, Nurses and staff of the Juravinski Hospital for their dedication and determination throughout Cathy’s cancer journey. The final outcome was unforeseen but the quality of care Cathy received until the last day gave her the strength to fight.
To Dr. A, Tracey and the entire staff at Stedman Hospice – thank you will never be enough to express the gratitude our family has for the care and dignity you provided during Cathy’s final days. Your compassion and kindness eased our anxieties and gave us peace. You are truly angels on earth.
“What we once enjoyed deeply, we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” Helen Keller
