Paul Orin Allison
November 12, 1937 – September 24, 2025
Paul Orin Allison was the kindest man we have ever known, blessed with a big heart, a keen intellect, and a deeply rooted sense of fair play. A quiet man until he knew you, Dad also had a sly sense of humour that coloured his observations of the world and made us laugh often.
Paul excelled at building things—crafting striking wood carvings, capturing beauty through photography, playing his beloved slo-pitch well into his early 70s, and mixing an excellent Manhattan. He could also watch an extravagant amount of sports on television, loved Roy Orbison, Anne Murray, CCR, and Linda Ronstadt in equal measure, and cooked with the same precision he once brought to his engineering career.
His father, Orin, was a boat captain who sailed freighters throughout the Great Lakes and up the St. Lawrence River. Though his work kept him away from home for months at a time, his connection with his son remained strong and constant. His mother, Margery, was a teacher who instilled in him a love of language, a mastery of penmanship, and a gentle nature. An only child, Paul built a family of friends through his childhood buddies, and his adventures in Collingwood in the 1940s and 1950s live on in sweet family lore.
Paul met Anne Carruthers when she was 16 and he was 17, and they were inseparable from that moment on—together for 62 years, until her passing the day after their anniversary. Anne and Paul delighted in their children, Jane and Greg, and were playful, loving parents. After raising their family in Burlington, they returned to Collingwood, where they built businesses, careers, friendships, and community. A special joy for them were their trips to Hawaii, where the Aloha spirit left a lasting imprint on their lives together.
Now reunited with his soul mate Anne, Paul leaves his children Jane and Greg; his brother-in-law Dr. Ben Carruthers and his wife Cheryl, and their children and grandchildren. His lifelong friend since Grade 5, Greg Taylor, was his final visitor beyond his family.
Our deepest gratitude goes to the skillful and compassionate doctors, nurses, and first responders who cared for Paul so beautifully, especially Dr. Mark Quigg, and Jacqueline, Jessica, and Jenny at his practice. We appreciate the PSWs who cared for Dad and made it possible for him to be at home as long as possible. The extraordinary team at Campbell House Hospice ensured Dad’s passage was peaceful, loving, and even joyful. A special note of thanks to Palliative Care Resource Nurse Alanna Roylance, whose compassion and care made our final days with him peaceful.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Paul’s life will be held in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Hospice Georgian Triangle Foundation will help ensure more families can experience the same exceptional, supportive end-of-life care.
To our sweet Daddy, a Hawaiian farewell: Aloha ‘oe – A hui hou. Until we meet again.
