With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Harold (Sid) Seaward Tarrant, who passed peacefully at Cambridge Memorial Hospital on September 10, 2025, in his 81st year. Born August 17, 1945, in St. John’s, Newfoundland to Mary and George Tarrant.
A proud veteran of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, Sid built a remarkable career rooted in hard work, leadership, and mentorship. He believed strongly in the value of higher education and was dedicated to helping countless people grow in their trades and careers. Throughout his working life as a welder, quality control supervisor, and NDE technician, he held positions with Sheldon’s Engineering (over 20 years, 10 as union president), Sulzer Bingham Pumps, Holden Fans, and Perfection Inspection Limited, where he retired at the age of 78.
Sid’s devotion to community was unwavering. For over 50 years, he was a proud member and volunteer with the Galt Royal Canadian Legion and the Cambridge Newfoundland Club, where he contributed his time and talents to countless events, including the Executive, Annual Turkey Raffle and Reunion. any also fondly remember him as the writer of “Newfoundland Notes”, a column published in the Cambridge Reporter newspaper for more than a decade.
He was honoured to receive a commemorative medal for his contributions in 1993, by the Canadian government.
Sid is survived by his loving children, Karen (Ken) Coull and Tracy (Russell) Blackler; his sisters Marilyn (Detlev) Friese and Diane Neil; and brothers Lorne (Joan), Roland “Rolly” (Joanne), and Bob (Mary) Tarrant, and sisters-in-law Dorothy & Betty. He was predeceased by his brothers Weldon and Walter Tarrant, and brother-in-law Phil Neil.
Resting at the Corbett Funeral Home, 95 Dundas St. N Cambridge where the family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 17 from 6-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the funeral home chapel on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at Trinity cemetery, 72 Blenheim Road, Cambridge (directly beside Mount View cemetery) A gathering will follow at the Cambridge Newfoundland Club.
Sid will be remembered as a kind and thoughtful soul, generous with his time, quick with a witty remark, and deeply committed to his family and community. His legacy of service, generosity, and humour will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity Anglican Church Food Table, in accordance with Sid’s wishes.
