Barbera, Peter Aloysius
On Saturday July 19, 2025 at St. Peter’s Hospital in his 83 rd year, Peter took his final breath as his brief yet brave battle with cancer came to a close, his loving family remaining by his side every day of his struggle. Peter is reunited with the love of his life, Barbara (nee McInerney), finally holding baby daughter Angela in his arms as he joins them in paradise alongside his parents Andrea and Giovanna Barbera, and his brother Joseph. Peter is survived by his loving sons Michael (Carm), Mark (Jeff) and Robert (Michelle) and leaves behind the joys of his life, his grandchildren Kelsey (Lucas), Vanessa, Brett, Lidia, Rebecca and Katelyn. He was proud of the many accomplishments all his grandchildren have made. He took comfort in knowing that each and every one of them are set to achieve great things in their lives as they help make a better world for their children and their children’s children. He was thrilled to learn in his final weeks that a new generation of the family was on the way. Peter will forever be missed by his caring sisters, Anna-Maria Blanche (Paul) and Margaret Barrett (Ted), who were by his side nearly every day since Peter started this unexpected journey in March. He is also survived by his sister in law Janice, many cousins, nieces and nephews and will be missed by the countless number of friends Peter has made over the years. Peter was a retired 40-year employee at Stelco and helped guide the careers of many of its employees who worked with him during that time. He was also very active as a coach in little league baseball in the 1970’s and helped many local youth develop their athletic abilities and a healthy sense of sportsmanship during that time. Peter’s family would like to acknowledge the care that was provided by the neurosurgery staff at Hamilton General and the oncology department at Jurivinski Hospital. The family would also like to give a special thank you to Drs. Tanaguchi and Bullock along with the entire staff of St. Peter’s Palliative Care for the exceptional care they gave Peter during his final weeks with us. Family and friends will be received at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 796 Upper Gage Ave. (between Mohawk and Fennell) on Friday July 25th from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. with prayers at 8:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 128 Edgemont St. S. on Saturday July 26th at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Peter’s family will welcome donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation for St. Peter’s Hospital.
