BROWN: Brian passed away peacefully July 4, 2025 at his Haysville home, surrounded by family.
Brian is survived by his wife Valerie (Elliott) Brown; daughters Amanda Brown of Haysville and Kristen (Brown) Steary of Vancouver, BC; son-in-law Dugg Steary and step-grandchildren Kai and Soleil Steary; mother Dorothy (Simpson) Brown of Washington, ON; sisters Brenda Arnott and Gwen Oakes, both of Washington, ON, nieces Danielle and Tamara and their families, and nephews Jon and Tyler and their families; and niece Katrina Brown of Calgary. Also survived by brothers-in-law Rick Arnott of Washington, ON, Bill Schneider of Fergus, ON, and Alan Elliott of Scotsburn, NS, and their families. He will also be missed by beloved dog Lucy.
Brian was predeceased by his father Harvey Brown (1985) and his brother Brad Brown (2018).
Born in Galt, Brian was raised in the Washington, ON family home, and made lifelong friends in the area. For many years at holiday dinners, Brian gleefully recounted their teenage naphtha-fueled bonfires.
Working on area farms in his youth, Brian particularly liked to reminisce about his work on Oxford tobacco farms. After graduating from Waterloo-Oxford D.S.S., he completed trade school at Fanshawe College and became an electrician, a license he held until after he retired from his second career, just in case it didn’t work out. First, Brian spent 13 years working as a commercial electrician at Sutherland-Schultz, then became a partner in the family insurance brokerage upon the death of his father Harvey in 1985. After 30 years at Dalrymple Insurance and on the Tavistock golf course, Brian retired in 2014.
After retirement, Brian spent long hours pursuing his love of gardening and maintaining an immaculate rural property, including cultivating habitats for bees, birds, and butterflies. Brian especially liked watching birds, eagerly awaiting the arrival of migratory birds each spring, his favourites being grosbeaks, hummingbirds, and orioles.
An athlete, Brian also enjoyed watching sports, never losing faith in the Blue Jays, and providing colour commentary for NCAA basketball and Canadian curling. Brian excelled at every sport he tried, playing in local leagues for basketball, other ball games, and curling. He considered his biggest sports achievement to be when he was the pitcher for the New Dundee team that won the 1971 Ontario Rural Softball Association championship.
Brian and Valerie were married August 10, 1974 in New Hamburg, and celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2024.
In keeping with Brian’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral.
In Brian’s memory, please consider a donation to the Grand River Cancer Centre, and make time to watch your garden grow.
