It is with profound sadness that the family of Chris Voke announces his passing on
April 3, 2025. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Lori Agro, and cherished son,
Joshua Voke.
Chris was born in Weston on December 27, 1960, as the youngest of three sons to
Doreen Newton and Jerry Voke (affectionately known as “Old Timer”). Though raised
in Toronto, he spent many weekends in Hamilton at the home of his Aunt Betty and
Uncle John. This second home became a special place for Chris and his brothers,
Cam and Brian, fostering a bond with cousins Paul and Jan that felt more like siblings
than cousins.
Chris was a “Good” man. Everyone instantly liked him; he had an easy laid-back
manner with a sharp sense of humour and a quick wit. Chris worked tirelessly for his
family for many years. Chris ventured into his own business often to wake at 3 am to
be at the Food Terminal in Toronto, helping out at the family growing facility and
providing Lori with wise business advice. More recently during the summer months
Chris enjoyed working at the Brooklea golf course in Midland where he forged great
relationships with fellow coworkers.
Chris met Lori in Hamilton’s north end while they worked across the street from one
another—Chris at Hertz Rent-a-Car and Lori at Agro Seafood. Forty years ago, Chris
bought a pound of shrimp and asked Lori on their first date to see Rodney
Dangerfield and they have been together ever since. They were happily married for
36 years.
Family was Chris’s greatest joy. He often said the happiest day of his life was the day
Josh was born. Chris and Josh shared a special bond, whether watching sports,
barbecuing, or golfing together—always accompanied by playful teasing about Josh’s
golf grip.
NFL Sunday was a special day for Chris and his family. Chris would religiously tune
in to the NFL broadcasts (both radio and TV) every Sunday morning listening to the
experts before his picks. For some reason he loved to bet the over but rarely won
that bet, it was often joked that whatever Chris bet, Josh and Lori would take the
opposite bet. He had high hopes for the Buffalo Bills this year but sadly did not see
them triumph.
Chris was a natural athlete who embraced golf and curling from a young age. Despite
his laid-back demeanor, he played with competitive spirit and often emerged
victorious. While modest about most achievements, he took pride in his “gardening
skills,” honed at the cottage while enjoying music from Grateful Dead, Peter Tosh,
and Bob Dylan in the background. At their Wendake Beach cottage on Georgian Bay,
Chris and Lori loved hosting dinners with neighbors and family. Chris mastered the
smoker, preparing specialties like ribs, chicken, and peameal bacon. After dinner, he
could often be found at the beach with his beautiful frisbee-catching dog Lela by his
side or relaxing on the deck to enjoy Georgian Bay’s spectacular sunsets.
Chris is survived by his wife Lori Agro; son Joshua Voke; brothers Cam
(Elizabeth)Voke and Brian (Heather) Voke ; in-laws Dawn (Michael) Pray, Sam Agro,
Julia (Salvatore) Frisina; cousins Paul Augustyn and Jan Augustyn (Jay) Peachey;
John White; numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved deeply; as well as many
friends who will miss him dearly. He is predeceased by his parents Doreen Daniels
(Ab) and Jerry Voke; parents-in-law Louis and Joan Agro, sister-in-law Marisa
(Clifford)Kane
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made in Chris’s name to demazenod-door.ca—a St.
Patrick’s Parish outreach program in downtown Hamilton that provides meals to
hundreds daily.
I Will Take you Home
Long is the road
We must travel on down
Short are the legs
That will struggle behind.
I wish I knew for sure
Just where we’re bound,
What we will be doin’
And what we’re going to find.
Wherever we go,there will be birds to cheer you
Flowers to colour in the fields around.
Wherever we go,I’ll be right here near you
You can’t get lost when you’re always found.
I will take you home.
Gonna carry you back home
In my arms
I will take you home.
