Obituary of MARIA CRUPI
MARIA CRUPI
July 5, 1943 – February 18, 2025
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that our family announces the passing of our mother and grandmother Maria Crupi on February 18, 2025 at the Tudor House Personal Care Home at the age of 81 years.
Maria was predeceased by her parents Giacomo and Giuseppina, her husband Filippo and siblings; Francesco, Grazia, and Michele. She will be deeply missed by her son Giovanni, daughter-in-law Lorna and her 2 grandchildren Phillip and Sara, who she adored very much. Maria also leaves behind her sister Enza, brother Antonio, sister-in-law Giuseppina, brother-in-law Salvatore and her many cherished nieces and nephews.
Maria was born on July 5, 1943 in Villarosa, Sicily. Her parents and 5 siblings worked hard to provide for the family and improve their quality of life. She immigrated to Belgium for a better life when she was 8 and later came to Winnipeg in 1960 at 16 years of age to join her 2 older siblings who had already immigrated here. Coming to Canada and leaving behind her parents and 3 younger siblings in Belgium was difficult for her as she missed them dearly. In 1964 she sponsored them to live in Canada and one year later the family was reunited again. Mom was proud to be Canadian and very thankful for what this country was able to provide. During this time, she was writing love letters to our dad Filippo and when he proposed to her in one of those letters, she sponsored him as well, without even having met! They married on September 10, 1966 in Winnipeg and spent 56 wonderful years together before dad’s passing in 2022.
Maria worked for 48 years at Peerless Garments where she was a sewing machine operator. She took pride in keeping her home clean and taking care of her family. Mom was a master chef and loved to cook traditional Italian foods. She loved to dress up, dance and entertain and her basement was a popular spot for many family parties and Christmas’. She adored her children and grandchildren and made sure they were looked after in the present and in the future. She enjoyed travelling with dad to the cabin at Grand Beach, Belgium, Mexico and the Caribbean but her favourite place was always her home. Mom will be sadly missed by all who knew her. A big thank you goes out to all the staff at Woodland Courts, Tudor House and the Selkirk hospitals for all the care she received as she struggled with her illness.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 26 at Holy Rosary Church, (510 River Avenue) with Condolences at 10:00a.m., and Mass at 11:00a.m
Following the service, Entombment will take place at Queen of Heaven Mausoleum, Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue West.
Following the entombment, a reception will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel (1442 Main Street).
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in Maria’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba.
