Mary Jean MacInnis
1958-2025
It
is with great sadness that the families of Mary Jean MacInnis announce
her sudden passing on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. Our sweet,
sometimes sassy, and often bossy sister was born on September 22,
1958. She is survived by her mother
Mary, sisters Anne, Patricia (Brad),
brothers Scott (Kim), John (Jennifer), and Jason (Jill).
She was predeceased by her loving dad,
Rod.
Mary Jean loved her family, many
friends, and the caring staff and residents at her home. Our father
always called her his angel and we loved our special sister. She had a
lively sense of humour and took joy in every day. As a young child,
she played with her sisters, sought furry animals to pet and took part
in family picnics, beach days, fishing trips, and summers in
Cape Breton. It became apparent that
a brain injury at birth would limit her chances for an education, but
her parents persevered and found Alice Cook’s special school
outside Yarmouth where she enjoyed her early school days. Later, she
attended the Nova Scotia Youth Training Centre in Truro where she
boarded during the term and came home for holidays. She especially
loved the music teacher, Mrs. Carrigan, who taught her many songs
– we often heard her sing “Snowbird” and “500
Miles” with great gusto.
After she graduated from the
Training Centre, she came home and was eventually placed in a small
options group home in Wolfville and then Kentville which was
administered by the Community Living Alternatives Society (CLAS). She
maintained close ties with her parents with daily phone calls and
frequent visits and she was always delighted to see her
siblings.
Mary Jean was an early participant
at the Flower Cart where she helped prepare napkin and plastic utensil
packages for fast food restaurants. She could
also get into a bit of mischief
there from time to time – dropping in at an office, touching
every key on the computer keyboard and then leaving
quickly.
Mary Jean loved birthdays and
celebrations of every kind. Her favourite day of the year was her
birthday, and everyone made sure that it was a special one. Easter,
Valentines, St Patrick’s, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and
Christmas were made extra special because of her love of these
opportunities to get together with other people to share food,
laughter, trinkets,
gifts and movies. She loved long drives in the country and shopping.
She regularly checked the mail and would be thrilled to open
a new card that she could add to her vast
collection.
Her
good friend Eranie shared that Mary’s adventure with CLAS
began in 1976, where she instantly made her way into
everyone’s heart with her flair for fashion, jewelry, and
beloved hats. Her quirky sense of humour and language skills could
catch you off guard anytime, she loved to get a reaction and a smile.
Mary would always remember people she met to the
point it felt like escorting a celebrity rather than work. She was
passionate and very caring. She had many, many friends and you could
always count on her to give you a unique nickname, and it stuck. She
will be very missed by her housemates, Michelle and Marnell, her AGAPE
staff team, her best buddy Schmitt, her Aunt Gertrude who adored her
and everyone who knew her. Mary lit up a room, filled quiet spaces and
made herself known. You couldn’t help but love
her.
