Diana Marilyn Zeggil (nee Wells) passed away peacefully after a brief illness, at the age of 95. She will be forever remembered with love by her dear husband Fred, her 4 children; Dave (Linda), John (Cate), (Donna), Laurie (Ken), Libbie (Rick), her 11 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
Our beautiful Diana has gone to be amongst the other angels in heaven to continue to watch over and care for us all. Her inner strength, stubbornness, and determination fooled us all into believing she could and would live to be 100 as she never lost her will to live and to be the life of this party we call life.
Diana was predeceased by her Father, Charles Wells, CP employee, a British immigrant, rugby player, and polio survivor, her Mother, Myrtle Wells- a kind quiet-spoken prairie raised, life-long Peace activist, and by her beloved younger siblings, Richard, Joan (Lord), and Nancy. (Their children Corinne, Pam Michael, Sarah, and Paul will remember their Auntie Diana fondly.)
Diana lived an idyllic childhood growing up in East Kildonan, Winnipeg, of which she often spoke nostalgically. Diana enjoyed playing high school basketball and socializing with the canoe club and although she suffered from shyness as a child she decided to become a teacher. Her first teaching job took her to Churchill, Manitoba and she loved the adventure of travel and meeting new friends. It was there Diana met her future husband, Fred Zeggil and in December 2024 they celebrated 70 years of marriage.
Along with their four children, Diana and Fred embarked on the journey of military life and all that entailed -with frequent moves, new schools, and upheavals and Diana never returned to teaching. She became a full time “homemaker” – a job she took very seriously. No matter where they moved Diana always made sure that their home had the same original furniture and sentimental objects that were transported with them across the miles, giving the family a sense of stability. She always brought elegance to a frugal lifestyle.
Diana was very popular and made friends easily. Her generosity of spirit and giving of time gave her so many lifelong friendships that endured through the years and gave her so much joy. The other military friends became her surrogate families that followed them around year after year when they didn’t have
family close by. Diana loved to entertain and open her home to guests who were treated to her wonderful meals and conversations and dinner parties were her favourite.
What first began as a way to save money by sewing her children’s and her own outfits, she turned her talents to sewing, quilting, knitting, and crocheting so many works of art over the years! Diana found a passion for her creativity in macrame in the 70’s and sold her lovely creations and spent many Saturdays at the craft markets In New Brunswick loving her time with the fellow craftspeople. She was a closet “Hippie” in those days, a refuge from the demands of life as a military “wife”.
Diana was most proud of her 11 grandchildren, Taylor, (Irena) Jared, Darren (Carole), Nathan (Sarah), Gavin, Ryan, Colin and Niki (Andrew), Cory, Teagan (Lindon), and Alex (Louise) -as well as 5 great grandchildren, Brady, Sienna, Henry, Elizabeth, and Jack. She carried a bragging booklet with her with photos of all of them. She spent as much time as she could with each and every one of them and they all felt sheepishly as if they were most likely the favourite one. She made them beautiful quilts, clothes and would read to them, take them on field trips and make sure they ate their fruit and vegetables. She loved them unconditionally, whether they ate them or not.
Diana loved her crosswords, sudoku, music, and reading. She loved her wardrobe, being fashionable and took good care of her health and as a testament, she was still having her hair and nails done impeccably and looking fabulous at 95. Whether she was camping across Europe with four kids in tow while stationed in Germany, cleaning and packing up a house to move and pass the inspection, dressing up in a ballgown to attend a military function, or simply walking with her grandchildren on a nature trail, Diana was a beautiful and classy lady.
We are so extremely grateful for all of her love over the years and the time we had to spend with her. We cherish our memories and celebrate this unique and beautiful soul that we can call our wife, our Mom, mother-in-law, our Grannie, our great-Grannie, our Auntie, sister-in-law, and our friend. Our sympathies and sincerest condolences go out to her devoted husband, Fred, who can only think back on their years together and wonder to himself. “How did I get so lucky?”
We know that our angel is watching over us all, especially at this time.
A Memorial service will be held in Stittsville in May.
