Audrey Georgina Torgunrud was born on June 5, 1933 to Edwin and Anna Torgunrud of Maxim, Saskatchewan. She spent most of her growing up years in Midale, SK. enjoying sports, friends and the joys of small-town life. Following highschool she trained as a psychiatric nurse in Weyburn, and later started general nursing training at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon. Activities at Zion Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Student Movement enriched her social and spiritual life, and led to meeting a seminarian, Edward Hedlin. This friendship blossomed into a happy marriage of 67 years. They shared in ministry and together they raised a family of six children: Karen Hedlin, Kathryn Scott, Beth Hendricksen (Dennis), Janet Hirch (David), Mark Hedlin (Heather), Gina Haberstock (Corey). Audrey dedicated herself to the care of twenty-five children over many years as a foster parent, including Corey Wizniuk who stayed as part of the family from the age seven years on. In Swift Current, Audrey spent some years as an Early Childhood Intervention worker supporting families and preschoolers with challenges. Ed and Audrey’s family expanded to nineteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
In retirement, Audrey and Ed spent the first years in their house in the Broadway area, and appreciated closer proximity to family for coffee gatherings and reunions, trips to the cabin, walks and gardening. They enjoyed the fellowship of Augustana and Trinity Lutheran churches, and the warmth of the community at Luther Heights.
Audrey is predeceased by her parents, Edwin and Anna, siblings Odelite, Eugene, Duane, Olive, Ted and Carolyn, in-laws Elwin, Corrine, Frans and Margery Hedlin, Alan, Isabel, Robert, Alice, Hugh, Vi, Charles, Phyllis.
Audrey is survived by husband Edward, siblings Elwood, Connie, in-laws Doreen, Russell, Carrie, Irma, Obert, Rick, Anne, Irene, and by her many nieces and nephews.
Audrey’s family appreciates the kindness and attention she received at Luther Heights Intermediate Care, and the unstinting and loving care in her failing months at Sunnyside Adventist Care Center, where she died on Sunday, January 19.
For those who wish to honor Audrey’s memory, they can make a donation to a charity of your choice, or pass on an act of kindness to help another with whom we share the road of life.
Her funeral service will be held at Trinity Lutheran on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. For those unable to attend the service, the family invites you to join the service via livestream.
