Lorraine graduated from the Halifax Infirmary where she trained as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She worked in various locations throughout Nova Scotia in her nursing career such as the Victoria General, Liverpool and Inverness hospitals, and then settled at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital in Middleton. She earned a great deal of respect from her coworkers and was well known for her hard work ethic and compassionate bed-side manner.
To capture Lorraine’s essence into words is truly a difficult task as she deeply touched the lives of so many people. Above everything else in the world, she valued her family the most. Her immense connection to her children, grandchildren, siblings, extended family and friends was undeniable. It was a ripple effect. She never left out an “I love you” and her praises to others were never left unspoken. In true essence of Mom, every son in law thought he was the favourite. Lorraine had an abundance of pride for her five daughters and her grandchildren, and she had an authentic desire to know all the details of their lives. Her creativity was displayed in hand-crafted quilts and crafts with her grandchildren. It extended into her letters and cards to everyone. Brightly colored etchings and warm well-wishes faithfully found people near and far. To receive mail from Lorraine brought cheer to your day before even opening the envelope. She was no stranger to adventuring and living life to the fullest: camping, ski trips, NHL games, making friends on the spot, Boston marathoning and, of course, traveling to see loved ones, such as her trips to the West. Her arrivals were magical and her departures were lonesome.
Mom loved the simple things in life so much. Her cat Starlight was a true companion and her connection to all the family animals brought her so much happiness. She loved an easy phone call and staying in touch with everyone, ensuring we kept her up to speed on all the news. Her unique flair for fashion could light up the room. She loved early morning sunrises and found joy in beautiful sunsets. She cherished being outdoors in the fresh air, her clothesline, long walks, gardening and collecting fresh flowers. She loved the water more than anything. The waves of West Mabou beach were a place of peace and tranquility. She never would pass on the opportunity to jump in for a dip. Her pies, cookies, and the aroma of her home-made donuts and fresh baked bread will be spoken of for many years to come. The volume alone was remarkable!
Lorraine had an innate sense of knowing how things were going. A gentle reminder to “have a little rest” always came at the right time. The beautiful way she soothed babies was a welcome relief to tired moms. You could always count on words of optimism and hope to turn a tough day around. Her time as a nurse was reflected in her natural ability to care for others. A surprise gift or special token was a delight to receive, and her sweet laugh will echo in all our minds and hearts.
We know Lorraine has been greeted with heavenly, open arms from loved ones who have passed before her. She will continue to spread love and joy through her children, grandchildren and extended family. Our beautiful mom is at peace. “I love you, I love you, I love you”. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia. A heartfelt thanks is extended to the First Responders. A Celebration of Life will take place in her beloved village of Mabou mid-summer.
