HAMILTON, James
July 23, 1931 — January 30, 2023
Jim was a gentleman and friend to all he met. He was an inspirational husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed and dearly loved his family and had a special personal connection with each of them.
Born in Maidstone, Saskatchewan to James and Gladys Hamilton, Jim had three sisters, and one surviving brother Bob Hamilton. Jim spent his early years in Hanna, Alberta, and growing up there he played hockey avidly. One of his first jobs was delivering meat to customers for the local butcher shop on his bicycle.
Married to Marian, the true love of his life, Jim and Marian recently celebrated sixty-nine years of marriage. A delightful milestone for them. They were truly a team that worked in tandem and beautifully complimented each other. Their married life started off in Hanna and they later moved to Banff on Beaver Avenue.
Jim and Marian eventually moved to Calgary and raised their two children James Thomas, and Donna Marie. Jim worked for Burns and Swift Canada as a meat salesman. This came easy for him due to his kind, generous and wonderful personality. It was in 1974 that he accepted an offer to open and manage the Kelowna branch of Centennial Packers on Leon Ave. He took the challenge and talked Marian into leaving Calgary for the beautiful Okanagan. Jim worked with Centennial Packers until retiring in 1993.
After moving to Kelowna, Jim and Marian enjoyed golfing with many long-time friends and pals at the Kelowna Golf and Country Club. At their home on Thacker Drive, they entertained regularly and had numerous memorable poolside socials with family and friends. Jim and Marian loved entertaining especially when Jim would grill up beautiful steaks for their guests.
Jim was a Rotarian with the Rotary Club of Kelowna and later president of the Westbank Rotary Club. Socially, Jim and Marian enjoyed many lasting friendships with fellow Rotarians and often including bridge parties and social gatherings. Jim was an active member and president of Cascade Falls Strata Council on Dilworth Mountain where they lived for eighteen years. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and routinely enjoyed delivering meals for ten years with the aid of his little white truck and red cooler.
Jim was a very understanding, positive, and inspiring father to son Jim (Gail Goldsmith) and daughter Donna (late Robert Fulthorpe). He valued his special relationships with his brother Bob and brother-in-law Tom and sister in-laws Isabel, Kathleen, and Madelyn. Enamoured by his grandchildren Robbie (Jaimie), Mathew (Dinu), Stewart (Kelsey), and Christine he ensured a special bond with each of them. Jim was delighted to meet and share his affection with his great-grandchildren, Kloey, Easton, and Kinsley.
Friends and Family will remember Jim for what he did to make them feel at ease, acknowledged, and very present when they had the pleasure of his company. Jim will be fondly remembered for his sharp wit, his wonderful zest for life, great company, and his original sense of humour.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be announced and held at a later date with family and friends.
