Remembering Greg
Greg is now doing what he loves: he has picked up his golf clubs and is headed down his favourite fairway.
Gregory Kenneth Congdon was surrounded by loved ones on February 27th, when he passed away at the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. He had bravely endured Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) since his diagnosis in June, 2021.
Born in Truro on April 23, 1955, to Audrey (Gordon) and Kenneth Congdon, he grew up on the family dairy farm with his siblings Douglas, Alan, Keith, and Dianne. This is also where his distrust of anything feathered began. An active athlete, Greg grew up playing baseball (first base) and hockey (defense – with the bruises and veneers to prove it). The importance of friendships and community was something Greg valued very much and encouraged his own daughters to pursue.
Greg knew from a very early age that he wanted to be a carpenter. After attending Truro vocational school, he developed a successful lifelong career building homes in the Truro and Great Village area, working at CFS Debert, and finally retiring from his position at the Dorchester Penitentiary.
In 1996, Greg and his family moved to Sackville, New Brunswick, where he participated actively in his daughters’ school activities, including chauffeuring Tantramar teams to games throughout the province. In 2013, Greg and his best friend and partner-in-life Karen settled in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, where he quickly became part of the community, doing handyman work with his good friend Sterns, and making many friends through his love of golf as a member of Brule Point Golf Course.
Greg is survived by wife Karen (Ripley), daughters Ainsley (Brendan), Holly (Patrick), and Megan (Ryan), and grandchildren Cameron, Noah, Raelyn, Henry, Duncan and Hunter; siblings Dianne (Gordie), Keith (Kerri) and Douglas (Judy), sister-in-law Darlene Ross (Wayne), brother-in-law Neil Ripley (Bev) and many close cousins, nieces and nephews.
Never one to let his health obstacles interfere with his passion for life, family and friends, Greg benefitted tremendously from the generous gift of a kidney transplant (2015), and the many caregivers who became like family. Greg’s supporting cast of close friends—Eric, Gordie, Mike, and Sterns—provided a constant source of laughter and joy.
To the man who was always there for his daughters; who showed them how to use all the power tools; who loved his wife dearly; who had a passion for making bowls and sharing his knowledge of all things wood; who knew how to tear up the dance floor; who loved the game of golf, the Leafs and the Jays. We will miss you always.
When the grass is green, a celebration of life will be held at the Brule Point Golf Course. In-lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are under the direction of Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche.
