Obituary
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Florence Louise Chateau on January 10th, 2023, at the age of 89 years. Florence passed away peacefully with her family by her side, as a resident of the Citadel Long Term Care Centre in St. Albert, Alberta.
Florence was born in Peace River, Alberta on January 22, 1933, the eldest of seven children. She grew up in the Harmon Valley/Reno area and graduated high school in Peace River and soon after left for the big city lights of Edmonton, to attend the U of A and earn her education degree. Her first teaching post was in the small hamlet of Deadwood in northern Alberta where she would eventually meet the love of her life, Wilf Chateau in 1955. They had a short courtship and eventually married on July 9th, 1956, at the Chateau family farm and came to reside in Fairview to begin their married and family life together where they raised five children.
Florence began teaching at St. Thomas More Catholic School in the fall of 1956 and over the years taught numerous grades and eventually settled into teaching Grade 3 the later part of her career. She retired after 30 years of teaching in June of 1988.
In her spare time and especially during retirement she was an avid reader. She enjoyed old time music and dancing; her flower garden where peonies, lilies, and sweet peas were some of her favorite flowers. She enjoyed camping with her children and grandchildren over the years, her love for the family pets and having tea and visits with her life-long friends.
She was a much-loved mom of Shannon Busby (Brad), Patrick (Tammy Lynn Griffin), Debra Chateau-Lascelle, Brenda Litke (Glenn), Suzanne Chateau-Fuhr (Chris); 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She also leaves to mourn her passing sister Beverly Lowe, brother Blaine Griffith (Donna), brother-in-law Henry Chateau (Helen), sisters-in-law Helen Milner, Therese Dion (Roger) and Charlotte Madden (Wayne) along with several nieces and nephews.
Florence was predeceased by her husband Wilf, parents Rupert and Francis Griffith, sister Jean Knox and husband Laverne, sister Mae Kulver and husband George, brothers Lee and Kenny, brothers-in-law Aubrey Milner and Russell Lowe, nephew Dion Lowe, son-in-law Roch Lascelle, and great-grandson Elliott Grayston.
A Prayer service for Florence will be held on January 19th, 2023, at 7 PM at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Fairview and a Funeral service will be held on Friday, January 20th, 2023, at 10 AM at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with Interment to follow at Friedenstal Cemetery, Fairview.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and/or the MS Society.
