Died peacefully in her sleep, at Nithview Home in New Hamburg, in her 102nd year.
The former Esther Berg was predeceased by her husband, Weybourne Hoerle, a brother Lloyd Berg and a sister Ruth Doering, son-in-law Paul Cress, two grand-daughters Julie Good and Marta (Hoerle) Herron, as well as several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law – Elmer Lantz, Walter Doering, Rueben and Irene Wettlaufer, George and Charlotte Wegfahrt, Clarence and Martha Wegford, Bruce and Isobel Compass and Edgar Hoerle and his wives, Leona and Marilyn.
She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Lantz and her four children: Murray (Helen) Hoerle, Dianne Cress, Sandra (Robert) Good and Brenda (Terry Dale) Hoerle. Remembered by grandchildren Tracey Cress, Troy (MaryLynn) Hoerle, Jason (Lindsey Vivers) Hoerle, Jackie (Darin) Collier, Laurie (Jim) Montgomery, Nathaniel, Caleb and Olivia Dale, as well as eight great-grandchildren.
Born on a farm at Greenwoods Hill outside Wellesley on Nov. 15, 1921, Esther was the oldest daughter of the late Allan and Clara Berg.
She met and married Weybourne during the Second World War and moved to Philipsburg. Shortly after, Weybourne was conscripted into the Canadian Army, leaving her and son Murray behind with relatives on their 100-acre farm. It wasn’t an easy time for the newly formed family.
As a farmer’s wife, Esther not only milked cows, did barn chores and drove many a tractor during haying and harvest season, but also enjoyed collecting eggs from her chickens, working in her garden, canning everything from pork sausage to peaches and baking her much-loved apple-raspberry pies. She also loved going to dances, snowmobiling and listening to music, especially The Lawrence Welk Show on Sunday afternoons, when she would wish she hadn’t given up piano lessons as a young girl.
Esther was a longtime member of Zion Philipsburg Evangelical Lutheran Church and its E.L.W. women’s group. She was an avid sewer and quilter and well into her 90s, helped knot comforters with the church’s outreach group, Project R.E.D., named for her late sister Ruth.
She volunteered at the New Hamburg thrift store for many years, was named Wilmot Township’s senior of the year and loved going to Saturday morning garage sales with friends, especially Norma Hammer.
Esther also liked to travel and had fond memories of visiting Jamaica, Montana, Alberta and Alaska.
She loved the colour pink and hated snakes.
An avid royalist, Esther saw four monarchs crowned in her lifetime and delighted in seeing Prince Charles and Diana in person during their first visit to Ottawa as a couple in 1983. She never dreamed she would outlive Queen Elizabeth and eagerly awaited the monarch’s certificate in the mail acknowledging her 100th birthday.
Blessed with an incredible memory, Esther recently recalled her first day of school in Wellesley, where she was reluctantly nudged in the door by her father. She also remembered vividly the opening of the Philipsburg-to-Wellesley highway. Esther had beautiful penmanship and was an excellent speller. She also learned to drive a car in her late 60s, when Weybourne no longer could.
Esther was a gracious lady, with a quiet strength and stoic nature that kept her going in good times and in bad. She especially loved time spent with family and friends listening to stories and laughing together. We will miss her dearly but celebrate her well-lived, long, abundant life. Esther was a blessing to everyone she met.
A heartfelt thanks to staff on Nithview’s third floor for all the loving care Esther received.
The family will receive friends at Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg on Friday, May 12 from 5 to 8 p.m.
Esther’s funeral will be held at Zion Philipsburg Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3357 Erb’s Road, on Saturday, May 13 at 2 p.m., with Pastor Leanne Darlington officiating. A private internment in the church’s cemetery will follow, but all are invited to share memories and stories about Esther at a reception immediately after the service.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to Zion Philipsburg Lutheran Church’s Accessibility Fund – 3357 Erbs Rd, Baden, Ontario N3A 3M6 – would be appreciated by the family and can be arranged through the funeral home at 519-662-1661.
