With profound sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Joan Marie Kirkland, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, on April 25, 2024, at St. Clare’s, surrounded by her loving family.
Joan was born on November 12, 1945, and grew up in St. John’s. She met her beloved husband, Robert Kirkland, at the tender age of 10 on Kenmount Rd. Their childhood friendship blossomed into a beautiful love story, and they were married at a young age, embarking on a journey that spanned 61 years of marriage. Together, they raised four children, navigating life’s challenges with resilience and determination. In recent years, they enjoyed many wonderful times at their country house at Ocean Pond.
Joan ensured that her home was a haven of comfort and warmth. She enjoyed preparing special meals for her family and hosting gatherings to celebrate birthdays, holidays, and milestones. She poured her heart into creating a loving environment for her children and grandchildren, creating cherished memories of laughter and togetherness.
She delighted in playing cards with her grandchildren and hosting sleepovers, treating them to breakfast served in bed with Poppy Bob as the waiter and Nanny Joanie as the chef.
The consummate baby whisperer, Nanny Joanie, had an extraordinary knack for soothing and understanding infants, effortlessly calming them with her gentle touch and intuitive care. Many babies were deposited into her loving arms when exasperated parents needed a break.
Devoted to the care of her family, Joan dedicated herself wholeheartedly to nurturing her children and providing them with the best possible upbringing. Fond memories of growing up on Highland Drive involve the comforting aroma of nutritious, homemade meals welcoming you upon returning from school. Home was always complete with her presence, offering a sense of warmth and comfort.
Joan shared a special bond and friendship with her sisters, Chrissy, Brenda, and Betty. Their bond was forged through shared experiences and unwavering support for one another. It was a source of strength, joy, and laughter throughout Joan’s life.
Leaving to mourn, devoted husband and best friend Robert; children Tony (Carolann Hatcher), Keith (Carol), Kimberly Edwards (Scott); sisters Christina Doyle, Brenda Bennett (Tony), Elizabeth Chetman (Ron), daughter-in-law Suelynn Kirkland (Jeff Farage) and Anne and Abel Dignard, members of the Kirkland family; George (Ina), Richard (Lorraine), Jerome (Edwina), Lynda Hayward-Kirkland, Carol (David Blackmore) and Garrett (Dallas), as well as a large circle of relatives and friends.
Nanny Joanie’s love is forever etched in the hearts of her adored grandchildren, Tony, Ashley, Megan, Kelsey, Anna, Kirk, and Laura.
She was predeceased by cherished son Robert (Bobby) Kirkland, parents Anthony and Margaret Doyle, parents-in-law George and Josephine Kirkland, sister-in-law Judith Kirkland, brother-in- law David Kirkland, sister-in-law Mary Kirkland, and daughter-in-law Mary Kirkland.
Joan will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and devotion will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.
Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road on Sunday, April 28, and Monday April 29 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Funeral Mass to take place from Divine Mercy Parish, Newfoundland Drive on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at 11 a.m. with interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
Flowers will be gratefully accepted, or donations in her memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.
