It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Michael Patrick Barry at his residence in St John’s on January 2, 2024 at the age of 49. Beloved brother, father, uncle, cousin, nephew and friend.
Mike was born the second oldest child of Michael Patrick Barry Sr and Ruby Rideout Barry (both predeceased) in St John’s, NL.
At the age of 22, Mike began serving our country with the Canadian Armed forces. He served from 1996-2003, during which time he did three tours overseas, including special duty in Bosnia from 1997-1998. He was awarded the NATO medal for service, and a medal for his peacekeeping work. He was repeatedly referred to as “a very good soldier”. He was eager to learn and eager to help. He was very proud of his military background.
Upon completion of his military service, he returned to Ontario where he served his community as a firefighter. During that time, he celebrated the birth of his only son, Michael Patrick Barry-Ringhofer, whom he loved dearly.
Anyone who knows Mike, knows he was happiest when the snow was falling. Many many times he cursed the lack of snow. The woods was his happy place, be that fishing, hunting, skidooing or riding a quad with his buddies Scott and Jarvis. He loved to cook, “gravy is a beverage ya know”. He was learning to play guitar with his buddy Cyril and he loved his large double double, with a coconut cream donut. And his good neighbour Dan, his friend.
July of 2023, Mike welcomed his two beloved German shepherd puppies, Murdoch and Matilda. They were the joy of his life. He loved them with all his heart. Matilda was his girl, but Murdoch was his shadow, lovingly referred to as “Dad’s Boy”.
Left to mourn his passing with broken hearts, his brothers Leonard (Butch) Barry, Kevin Barry (Shelley), and Cecil Barry, His only sister, Joan Barry, special niece Chelsey Barry, and close family friend Kimberly Tait, who was not only his upstairs neighbour but his friend and confidante. His son, Michael Patrick Barry-Ringhofer of Ontario, as well as a large number of cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.
