So deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear brother, Br. John Joseph (Terry) Holden (Jan 18, 1946 – April 20, 2024) after a short illness in Sierra Leone, West Africa. He is predeceased by his parents John and Joan Holden, his infant brother Leo, and brother Kevin, (survived by wife Peg).
Left to mourn with fond and loving memories his sister Patricia (Larry deceased) Mike (Millie), Laura (David deceased) Ron (Marlene), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
John joined the Irish Christian Brothers at the age of 17, and after completion of Final Vows, served in many ministries including St. Bonaventure’s College, St. Joseph’s Academy Antiqua, Brother Rice High School as Principal. He also served in Calcutta, India with Mother Theresa’s Children, and spent 25 years in Africa including Cape Town, South Africa; Kabwe, Zambia; and returned to Sierra Leone in April 2023 to become Director of the Newly Opened Christian Brothers Retreat and Spirituality and Conference Centre in Hamilton. John had great enthusiasm and passion for the work in the Hamilton Retreat Centre and he was a talented, committed and generous Brother whose heart was in Africa, especially Sierra Leone. He was a true missionary, a man of great faith, humble, and touched the lives of so many people near and far. John lived a very fulfilling life, was dedicated to his profession and loved the life he chose.
John’s wishes were to remain in Africa for burial. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday May 18th at 2:00 pm at The Basilica Cathedral of St. John The Baptist. For those unable to attend the service, please visit thebasilica.net to view the livestream.
