Walter Joseph Brake Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and loyal friend, Walter Joseph Brake, of Kippens, on Thursday, April 25th, 2024, at Western Memorial Regional Hospital at the age of 71 years.
Born in Stephenville Crossing on January 8th, 1953, he was the son of the late Aiden and Olive (nee O’Quinn) Brake. After graduating from trade school, he went to work in the cable industry servicing homes and chatting with folks all over western Newfoundland and southern Labrador before retiring from Eastlink. In more recent years he spent his time berry picking, gardening, and learning to play accordion and guitar. Walter was an avid outdoorsman. Always game to cook up a scoff, he had a place at the table for whoever walked in the door. You could say that he lived by the lyrics to the Simani song, Music and Friends.
Walter is survived by: his daughter Christa Brake Richards (Brent); partner Phyllis Springle; grandchildren: Jamie Brake (Jessie), Jasmine Brake (Kevin), and Nicole Kennedy (Izak); great grandchildren: Jase, Harper, and Greyson; brothers & sisters: Germaine (Harold) White, Bernadine (Bill) White, Lorraine (Tom) Lammarah, Arthur (Ruby) Brake, Patrick (Debbie) Brake, Joanne AuCoin (Roy Keating), and Aidan (Karen) Brake; as well as a large circle of extended family and friends.
Walter was predeceased by: his beloved wife of 43 years Joy; parents Aiden and Olive; great grandsons Noah and Jayden; and nephews: Andrew, Aaron and Owen.
The visitation will take place on Sunday, April 28th at Russell’s Funeral Home, Stephenville from 2-4 & 7-9 PM and will continue on Monday, April 29th from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 30th at 10:30 AM from St. Stephen’s Parish. Interment to follow at Hillside Interfaith Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations in Walter’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at Health Sciences Centre, St. John’s, Western Memorial Regional Hospital, Corner Brook and Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital, Stephenville.
