Micheal Edward Hamilton Young (October 18, 1935-March 30, 2024)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mike Young on March 30, 2024 after a short but severe illness. Survived by Liz (Elizabeth), who has been his partner in life from the age of fifteen. His children Andrew (Catherine), David (Susan) Jennifer (Tjeerd)and Sarah (Marc) are thankful to have had such a loving, strong-willed and loyal man who lived his life with joy, honesty and integrity. His grandchildren Emily, Hannah, Adam, Caitlin, Liesbeth, Anneke, Teda, Sam and Lucas will miss Pop who loved them deeply and showed them kindness and generosity. He was a dedicated older brother to his sisters Jennifer Cook (Bill), Penny Humphreys (deceased) and he was loved by his nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his cousins, who have remained connected to him over the years through a shared and beloved family cottage on Georgian Bay.
Mike was a civil engineer who started his career in the military and then transitioned into Survey Canada in Ottawa where he was on the forefront of digitalization of the topographical maps. His next professional accomplishment was the founding of Thirty Thousand Island Sailing Adventures, a learn to sail program for aspiring sailors on beautiful but sometimes treacherous Georgian Bay. His sailboat named Cameo was also a source of great enjoyment for family and friends over the years. He has formed many friendships through his love of sport – in minor hockey with the Ottawa West Golden Knights during their years in Ottawa, sailing out of Kingston and then Georgian Bay and golfing throughout his life. He was thankful for his friendship with their neighbours Tom and Stephanie Sheridan. He will be missed by his golfing buddies at Cranberry Golf Club and the Leafs and Blue Jays have lost a battle-worn fan. Mike cared deeply about integrity in politics and about the future of our world and was never short on a strong opinion. He also loved to regale us with stories that made him laugh or warmed his heart (invariably about some good person that he had met).
Mike was never happier than when he was surrounded by his family and was deeply grateful for Elizabeth as his wife and mother of this family he so cherished. He lived a good life and we will try to live with the values and joy that he embodied.
Join us on Friday May 10, 2024 for a celebration of life (4-5 pm) and a reception (5-7 pm) at the Atoka House on the Cranberry Golf Course, Collingwood Ontario. Out of town guests who stay at Cranberry should indicate they are guests of the family of Michael Young.
If desired, please consider a donation to Right to Play in lieu of flowers.
