The family is saddened
to announce the passing of Joan Marlyn Hughes on Friday, February 23,
2024 at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre. Born in Toronto,
Ontario, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Louisa (James)
Crawford.
Although Joan
didn’t work outside the home, she was always kept busy as a
homemaker. She was much loved for her bread and rolls, as well as
knitting small stockings with a candy cane inside for each child who
came to their Christmas tree u-cut. Joan helped her husband, Ken
create Homestead Christmas Tree Farm and also managed Gold Star
Christmas Trees. She was a life member and secretary/treasurer for
Cobequid Christmas Tree Producers Association for over 25 years. They
participated in the tree and wreath competition and display at the
Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition in Bible Hill for many
years.
Joan is survived by
her daughter, Kim Fowler (Glen McNutt), Central North River; son,
Daniel (Sherri) Hughes, Salmon River; sister, Audrey Langdon, Orilla,
Ontario; grandchildren, Leslie Fowler, Jonathan Fowler, Connie
(Garrett) Pearce, Jamie Hughes (Ashley Dunlap), Shawn Hughes; great
grandchildren, Lucas, Zachary, Alexis, Hunter, Mason, Cash, Tyler;
brother-in-law, Jim Britton, Toronto, Ontario; several nieces and
nephews.
She was predeceased by
her husband, Kenneth; sisters, Eleanor (Ken) Minty, Ruth Britton;
brother-in-law, Albert Langdon; companion, Oakly Gates.
The family would like
to extend sincere appreciation for the compassion and care given to
Joan from paramedics, staff at Colchester Easts Hants Health Centre,
Alana Davidson (LPN of VON), Dr. Charles, friends, neighbours and
family.
There will be no
funeral as requested by Joan. If so desired, donations in memory of
Joan to Colchester SPCA or a charity of choice are welcomed.
