E. Emerson Mills,
K.C.
Edward Emerson
Nethercoat Mills passed away peacefully December 16, 2024 following a
brief illness. He was born to Edward Emerson Mills (posthumously) and
Elizabeth Knowling Nethercoat Mills on August 6, 1948. He
later became the son of Elizabeth Mills MacCharles and Russell F.
MacCharles.
Predeceased by his
parents and infant daughter, Emerson will forever be loved and
remembered by his cherished wife of nearly 52 years,
Maureen Whelly Mills, K.C.; daughter, Amanda Mills
Sirois (Eric); son, Toban Mills (Elizabeth);
grandchildren, Whelly and Moira Sirois,
and Braxton Mills; brother,
Brian Nethercoat Mills (Judy); sisters-in-law Sharon
Mills, Patricia Riley (Kevin), Elizabeth (the late Gary) Curran;
brother-in-law James Whelly (Cathy);
his Nethercoat cousins; many nieces and nephews;
and his longtime best friend, James
Morrison.
Always a high achiever
and an adventurer, Emerson was a Queen’s Scout in his youth, earning
all the Cub Scout badges as well as the Gold Chord and
Bushman’s Thong, one of the Scouting community’s highest
levels. He also excelled athletically and was recognized with varsity
letters at both Fredericton High School and the University of New
Brunswick (UNB), and received an Athletic Distinction Award from
UNB.
In his university
years, Emerson joined the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve through the
University Naval Training Division. In 1966 he trained on the east
coast, and the west coast in 1967, where he became a commissioned
officer. His training never left him; he was a self-proclaimed master
of the steam iron – continuing to polish his shoes and press
the household clothes throughout his life with
precision.
It was while attending
UNB Law School that Emerson met his lovely and accomplished future
wife, Maureen. Upon graduation, the two moved to Moncton
where they raised their family, practiced law, and both earned their
King’s (Queen’s) Counsel designations which acknowledged their
expertise in their preferred areas of law. Emerson was especially
proud of Maureen for being the first female law practitioner in the
City of Moncton, leading the way and setting an example for the female
lawyers to follow. Emerson retired from Bingham Law after
more than 40 years of practice and received his life membership in the
Law Society of New Brunswick in 2022.
Throughout
Emerson’s distinguished career and life, he
continued to give back to his community. He sat on the Law Society
Council for many years and was the President of the Law Society of New
Brunswick and a Director on the Federation of Law Societies. He also
served as the President of the New Brunswick Sailing Association and
the President of the Riverview Lions Club, where he oversaw the first
renovation of the Lions Centre and the start of Lions
Bingo.
As a member of the
Rotary Club, Emerson championed the Rotary Student Exchange Program,
creating several lifelong friendships and making a difference in the
lives of many international students who had the fortune of being
welcomed, mentored or hosted by him and his family.
Always an early riser,
this habit came in handy during the many years Emerson spent driving
his son, Toban, to early morning Codiac Vikings Aquatic Club swim
practices where he also volunteered and served as a senior swimming
official, supporting swim meets throughout the
Maritimes.
Emerson was a
long-time member of the Moncton Golf Club, hitting the ball off the
first tee for over 45 years. He served on the Club’s Board
of Directors on several occasions and, for the past three years, was
the Friday morning starter – nobody teed off until he said so. Emerson
made sure everyone was welcome at the club and that new members were
made to feel included – giving them the occasional insult,
just to make sure. He celebrated two holes in one during his life,
though he sadly regretted there wouldn’t be a
third.
Outside of work and
service commitments and practicing his golf swing, Emerson indulged in
many diverse hobbies throughout his life that ranged from macrame and
fly fishing, to windsurfing, wood-working and winemaking. His most
favourite pastimes, however, included travelling with Maureen; daily
visits to the YMCA gym; watching Survivor; and of course, working in
his garden – a talent he gleaned from his beloved mother and
grandmother.
To have met and
befriended Emerson, you likely knew and appreciated about
him the following:
* He spelled his name
Emerson with one ‘M’, and goodness help you if you
added a second ‘M’ to it.
* He appreciated a
good cocktail, particularly a Manhattan garnished with three
maraschino cherries, or a gin martini with three olives (noting that
for best results, the gin should be kept in the freezer prior to
serving).
* He adhered to an
early bedtime and wouldn’t be afraid to excuse himself from
the dinner table if you were still seated when he was ready to go to
sleep.
* He had a rather
unique brand of humour; it was rather his hallmark. And, if you were a
target or recipient of his teasing, you knew this meant he considered
you a friend.
* Above all else, he
loved and was deeply proud of his family.
In typical Emerson
style, and as a final expression of his unique humour, he said he
planned to swallow a box of popcorn kernels just before he passed.
Because of course, he wanted his cremation to be
epic!
A private funeral for
Emerson will be held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary church.
Maureen, Amanda, Toban and Brian invite family and friends to join
them in celebrating Emerson’s life with their memories and
stories at a reception to be hosted at the Dan Bohan Centre ona date
to be announced.
Arrangements are
entrusted to Cobb’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 330 Whitepine
Rd. Riverview (506-869-2007). In lieu of flowers, donations to Maison
Albert House or to the charity of your choice would be
appreciated.
Please continue to
remember and think of Emerson whenever you hear a particularly good or
groan-worthy Dad-joke, as you know he would have loved repeating it to
anyone who would listen. He will be so missed.
Maureen, Amanda, Toban
and Brian would like to express their particular gratitude to the
wonderful staff at Maison Albert House for their wonderful attention
and compassion.
