Susan was born in Gretna MB, the fourth of six children to Johann and Suzanne Sawatzky. She was 15 when the family moved to a farm in the MacGregor MB area. She met Harry Rempel at church when they were both 21. They married on July 6, 1958 and so began their adventure. The following is a condensed account of that adventure.
They were living in Winnipeg when they welcomed their first child, Gerald Warren, on May 19, 1959. They left the city and headed for Saskatchewan and one of many cowboy jobs settling in the Val Marie area where their second child, Richard Allen, was born on November 11, 1961. They were living around Herbert SK in 1963 where their only daughter Sandra Fay was born on March 14. Harry was managing a community pasture near Pelly SK when their fourth child was born in Benito MB; Lloyd George was born June 5, 1966. From there they moved to the Matador Ranch in Saskatchewan where Harry worked with his older brother John. They spent the winters on the headquarters yard, but summers were spent at the East Camp where Harry rode pastures. These were idyllic times for the kids who spent countless hours exploring the hills and coulees.
In 1970 the family moved to Manitoba and settled in the Douglas area. They spent many years there while the kids went through school. Susan was a farmer at heart and, though she made a garden wherever they settled, she really blossomed as a gardener. She planted what seemed, to the kids who weeded them, like acres of potatoes and all the rest, summer fallowing one patch for another one from year to year. Having unlimited space, she was able to branch out into fruit trees. She was in her glory. Oh, the bounty that filled their root cellar!
By the time their children were grown and gone, Harry and Susan decided to move west again, this time to Alberta. After a few years working different riding jobs, they found their dream ranch near Turin AB, the Little Bow River flowing through it. They lived there longer than they had anywhere else. Only when Harry got sick did they move again, this time to town. They lived in Picture Butte AB until his death in 2012. Susan stayed on there until 2015 when she moved to Oak Lake MB. Her neighbours in Oakwood Place welcomed her and became her beloved friends. It was something new for her to become involved in a community, but it was something she embraced. She loved to work at the pie table during the fair, loved the Garden Park, and loved the old church buildings of the museum. She still loved gardening but had to settle for her flower beds outside her windows.
Susan was predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years, her son Richard, sister Eva Peters, brother Bill Sawatzky, many brothers- and sisters-in-law. Left to mourn her passing are her children Gerry (Pat) Rempel and their family, Richard’s widow Susan Rempel and family, Sandra (Mike) Harris and family, Lloyd (Norma) Rempel and their family, foster son Todd Hooper and family, 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Susan’s funeral service will be held Saturday, June 29, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Alban’s Historical Church building in Oak Lake. The nearby Garden Park will be in full bloom. The interment will be in Oak Lake Cemetery.
