Obituary
Robert Joseph Gillis
(Bobby Joe)
It is with broken hearts and profound sadness that we, the family of Bobby Joe, announce his peaceful passing, at home, on Sunday, January 8, 2023, with his loving wife by his side. He suffered in silence for over a year with pancreatic cancer.
Bobby Joe was born in Sydney Mines on December 17, 1944, to the late Roddie and Veronica (Blinkhorn) Gillis.
Faith and family were his priorities in life. He was very active in his parish and was involved in the many things that it takes to keep the parish running smoothly. He was a eucharistic minister, altar server, Christmas altar decorator, and funeral altar server. He was a proud Cursillesta, having made Cursillo in 1998, where he sat at the table of St. Jude.
He started working at the age of 19 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, in the maintenance dept. From there, he sailed on the Cape Breton Miner, after which he delivered for Eaton’s for many years. He took a full-time job with the NSLC. After retiring, he joined Local 92 Laborers Union and did a few shutdowns out West.
Bobby Joe was a friend to many, and anyone who knew him can attest to his friendship, loyalty, and willingness to help others.
We camped for 25 years, mostly at Plage St. Pierre, where he had great times with friends. His best camping pal was Gilbert MacLeod (deceased). He was predeceased by his feline friend Bun-Bun.
Bobby Joe was a wonderful husband to his wife of 32 years, Ann Marie (Taylor), and a loving step-father to Patrick (Paddy) Taylor, and his wife Shawna. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Alica (Taylor) McCarvell, Amanda (Taylor) Tingley, Adam Taylor, and precious great-grandson Benny Tingley.
He is also survived by his brothers Roddie (Clara) and Bernie, sisters Aldric (Bill) LeBlanc, Vera (late Mick MacGillivray), and Belinda Gillis. He will be missed by in-laws Ina Taylor (Charlie deceased), Tommy (Pauline) Taylor, Margaret Rose Taylor, David Taylor, Violet (Wylie) Humby, and Blair (Patsy) Taylor.
Bobby Joe had a special bond with his niece Noelle Gillis, and his grand-nephew Luke Cogan. He had an unconditional love for all his nieces and nephews, and reveled in their accomplishments.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Bill (Kaye) and Lawrence (Carol).
A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at 11 am, in Holy Family Parish Hall, with Fr. Fabian Ihunegbo officiating. A visitation will be held from 10 – 11 am before Mass. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to Palliative Care Services or to the Holy Family Fuel Fund. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
“I believe this thing called life is about service to others and unconditional love.”
