William (Bill) Patrick McGarry (76), of Logan Lake, BC passed away on 16 December 2022 surrounded by family. Beloved husband of Linda McGarry (nee Knox), proud loving father of Liam (Tammy), Tiger (Pauline), Jennifer (Jayson) and Siobhain (deceased 2016). Loved dearly by his grandchildren and great grandchild. He is predeceased by his parents James and Stella McGarry and four brothers. He will be sorely missed by his remaining brothers and sisters in Canada, Ireland and England. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Though Bill came from humble beginnings he was always hardworking and deeply devoted to family. He grew up with his 10 siblings (7 brothers / 3 sisters) in Urlingford, Ireland. His love of the land started here during his countless hours on the “Bog” and working for local farmers. Seeking a new challenge, he immigrated to Canada in 1964 at the age of 18 and began his next chapter on his Aunt Mary and Uncle Jack’s farm in southern Saskatchewan. The Hubbard clan would form the early years of his Canadian education. After a few years of prairie hospitality, he found himself in Thompson, MB as a stope leader at the Inco nickel mine. It is here he met his soulmate, Linda. A seductive wink at her in the church choir, the twinkle in his eye, the flash of his dimples and the Irish brogue was all it took, and they were married 30 August 1969.
Not long after, the family soon found itself on the move and back on a farm in the prairies where Bill continued to feed his passion for the Land. A lifetime of farming, however, was not to be and the family was soon on the move again. After completing his schooling at STI in Moose Jaw, Bill accepted a job as a heavy-duty mechanic at Lornex Copper Mine and the family would soon join him in Logan Lake, BC, in fall of 1980.
Logan Lake would be Bill’s final move, retiring in 2009 to take time to enjoy family and his passions. Bill could always be seen on the golf course or tending his garden, often chasing away deer who were always consuming the fruits of his labor. He was an avid member of the local dart club, always sharing stories of Ireland and ensuring new players were educated on proper dart terminology and aiming juice.
We all love you, though you may be gone from this Earth, your memory and legacy will stay with all of us. Our hearts are filled with sorrow for our loss, but you will always remain in our hearts and minds.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday January 4, 2023 at St. Michael Parish, Logan Lake, BC followed by a reception at the Logan Lake Rec Centre Upper Hall.
Donations are gratefully accepted for Gillis House Hospice, c/o Merritt & District Hospice Society, 3451 Voght Street, Merritt, BC V1K 1C6.
