Obituary
FRASER, Russell William
The welding helmet has been laid down and the flame in the torch put out, it is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather Russell Fraser on Saturday, Dec. 24, surrounded by family at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford on Feb. 23, 1944, he was the son of the late John Dan and Victoria Fraser. He was a lifelong resident of New Waterford and would proudly tell people everywhere he went.
In his younger years, he met the love of his life Judy, who he married in 1970 and spent more than 50 years together. He spent lots of time in 14-Yard with Judy and racing vehicles with his friends.
Russell was a proud member of the Local 682, Sydney, where he was a welder for almost 40 years before his retirement in 2006.
He spent the last 10 years of his career with Lynk Electric Ltd. He remained a member of Local 682 following his retirement and received his 50-year pin from the union in 2016.
His wit and humor made him loved by all, especially with his friend and coworkers who share very detailed memories of their time with him. When you were having a bad day, Russell knew how to bring a smile to your face with his jokes.
Russell was very passionate for sports. He played various sports in his younger years including baseball in Scotchtown. He was a lifelong, die-hard Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Yankees fan. While he loved the Yankees, he had a special place in his heart for the Washington Nationals because of his grandson Jeremy.
Along with sports, Russell loved his vehicles. He was proud of his 1966 red and white meteor. He had many Ford trucks over the years in which he was proud of, including his last purchase a red Ford F-150 in 2014. He also loved country music, especially songs from Vince Gill and Alan Jackson.
In his retirement, Russell spent countless hours at hockey rinks and baseball fields across the province watching Jeremy. They were some of his proudest moments, especially watching the New Waterford Sharks. He also enjoyed drives with Judy and daughter Danette.
Russell is survived by wife Judy, daughter Danette (Harold), grandson Jeremy, brother Eddie (Pauline), New Waterford, Eunice, Mississauga, sister-in-laws Barbara Gillis, New Waterford, Shelia Pilon-MacEachern, New Waterford, and Debbie Fraser, Toronto, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins in which he loved very much, especially the special bond with niece Linda Guertin-Burchell and husband Robert of Mississauga.
He was pre-deceased by parents John Dan and Victoria Fraser, brothers Earl Fraser, Wayne Fraser, Gordie Fraser, sisters Marge Doucette and Lorraine Fraser as well as brother-in-laws Ernie Burchell, Leroy Doucette and Donald Morrison along with sister-in-law Denise Morrison, niece Lea Donovan, and father-and-mother-in-law Denis and Cassie Pilon.
The family would like to send a special thank you to all the doctors and nurses on the medical floor at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, who provided excellent care for him as well as Dr. Stephen Farrell, who was his family doctor for 45-year prior to his retirement in June and secretary Elaine Arseneau, and Dr. Dale Miller and his staff for more than 15 years.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 3, from 5-8 p.m. at McLellan Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Avenue, New Waterford, and a funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. A luncheon will be held at the Army and Navy Airforce in New Waterford.
