Paula’s Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Paula Deslauriers on February 17, 2022. She was a long time resident of McLennan and passed away peacefully at the Manoir du Lac in McLennan, at the age of 99 years.
Paula was born in McLennan on December 1, 1922 to Amable and Léontine Rémillard. She grew up on a farm near Girouxville, attending school at École Ste-Anne in Falher. On October 12, 1942 she married Joseph Deslauriers who was also from the Girouxville area. They later moved to McLennan. In the early years, they worked on the farm, constantly improving it. During the winter months, the small family would move to work at the saw mill operations. In 1951, they started a dairy to pasteurize milk purchased from local farmers. The dairy was sold in 1958. After this, Paula and Joe were involved with BA bulk fuel business, all the while improving the farm. Later, Paula found work at the local grocery store, mostly in the meat cutting department.
Being involved in the farm and the businesses, Paula still found time to sit on the school board for École Providence and volunteered many years with Le Movement des Femmes Chrétiennes for St. John the Baptist Cathedral Parish.
Paula was an avid gardener, growing vegetables & beautiful flowers. She was so proud when she was awarded McLennan’s Best Flowers of the Year in 2010, when she lived at the Manor West. She was an excellent cook and baker, as well as a prolific knitter. She made many sweaters, mitts and afghans for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She shared these talents with her family and the community, teaching the children from École Providence to knit. By far, her greatest love was her family. Nothing pleased her more than when she got news that someone was coming to visit. There were always plenty of cookies to greet everyone. No doubt the stock of Robin Hood flour took a dive when she stopped baking. The love and kindness she lived by will live on through her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was the last living member of her immediate family having been predeceased by her parents, brother, sisters and her husband Joseph of 64 years. Paula is survived by her five children: Rita (Jim) Harris, Stella McLachlan, Renée (Bill) James, Richard (Diane) Deslauriers and Carole (Vern) Laboucan, her fifteen grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration Mass of Paula’s life will take place July 4th at 2pm at the St. John the Baptist Cathedral in McLennan.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Smoky River Palliative Care Society (c/o PO Box 132, Falher AB, T0H 1M0) as expressions of sympathy.
