Mark Mendelson 2022

MENDELSON, Mark – We are sad to announce the death of Mark Mendelson, seventy-three, who died at the Jewish General Hospital suddenly, unexpectedly and without warning. For over 50 years, Mark was the much-loved and loving partner, husband and best friend of Edna, devoted and loving father to his children, Omer (Woochul) and Noam and adoring and doting Saba to the apple of his eye, Aaron. He will be deeply missed by his sisters Hazel, and Ilsa and (Tim), sisters in law Malka (Ed) and Sigal, his niece Maanit and nephews Yonatan, Daniel, David and their families, who lovingly called him “Dod Saba Mark”. He is survived by his aunt and uncle, Julian and Viorica, and his cousins Michaela, David, Sheila, Brenda, Susan and families. He was the beloved son of his late parents, Dr. Hyman and Audrey Lynne Mendelson. Mark was an extraordinary personality. His abundance of energy, good humour and generosity still amazed his longstanding friends and his cooking was widely admired. Mark gave “110 percent”; that was his bare minimum. After earning a Masters in Social Work and making Aliyah, he volunteered in the IDF as a Tzanchan (Paratrooper), earned his cap, worked as a psychologist in the Air Force, was promoted to Major and was a spokesperson for the IDF. After success in the delicatessen business, Mark returned with his family to Canada where he applied his fierce love of Israel to make JNF/KKL’s galas a must-attend event and Tu B’shvat Telethons the fun day that highschoolers remember fondly. As CEO of Ben Gurion University Canada, Mark reached his career zenith, where he devoted himself to raising money and teaching Canada about BGU’s cutting edge research, helping make the university and the desert bloom. Mark was a most beloved and admired boss, combining his passion for Israel and BGU with his Social Work and business skills. He will be greatly missed by the entire BGU community in Israel as well as in Canada. Still, nothing made Mark happier than being the husband, father (and “adopted” father), grandfather, and uncle to so many. He put family above all. His spirit lives on in his loving family and friends. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Thursday, November 17 at 12:00 noon. Burial at the Beit Abraham Family Estates Section, Kehal Israel Cemetery, D.D.O. Donations in Mark’s memory may be made to the “Mark Mendelson Memorial Fund” c/o Ben-Gurion University, (514) 937-8927 or Hebrew Free Loan, (514) 733-7128.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Mark Mendelson 2022..
