Surrounded by family on Monday October 31, 2022, in his 90th year. Son of the late William Henry and Cecilia (nee Whalen). Beloved husband of the late Mary Joan (nee Corbin). Devoted and loving father of Lorne (Catherine Keogh) and Donna-Marie. Proud grandfather of Everett, Erin Rose and Declan Flanagan. Survived by his brother Joseph Watters and sister Theresa Charbonneau and pre-deceased by his siblings Margaret, Emmett, Eddie, Gerald and Billy.
Born on November 9, 1932 in Ottawa, Lorne grew up in the VILLAGE! A place he was proud to be a part of, where he attended the Village Reunion faithfully. In his youth, Lorne enjoyed playing sports in the parks and rinks in the city, progressing to the junior hockey ranks with the Montagnards in the Quebec Junior Hockey League.
At a young age Lorne moved from Ottawa to play with St. Michael’s College Toronto and Windsor (both of the OHL) where he starred with the Spitfires attaining right wing league All Star standing in 1949 and 1950. On October 1, 1953 at the age of 20, Lorne turned pro with the Boston Bruins. Lorne played in leagues throughout Canada and USA where he was privileged in meeting many fantastic people developing friendships lasting a lifetime.
While away at hockey he received many cards and letters from family and friends, especially his pen pal – Mary Joan. They married in June 1957 and were blessed to have 56 years of marriage.
Upon completing his professional hockey career, Lorne returned to Ottawa joined the Ottawa Fire Service in 1957, where he had a 35-year career. Lorne was proud of his service and dedication to the community in his hometown.
Upon retiring, Lorne actively skated into his late 70’s. He cherished time lacing them up with his grandchildren, nephew Keith and new friends. We all had the privilege of sharing his many jokes and stories and would often hear him say “that’s different” when he learned how the times had changed. He loved his social life, hosting parties, visiting his regular spot at the corner of Preston and Beech and later taking up chair space at Shenanigan’s, where he enjoyed listening to the fiddle.
More recently Lorne got to know the wonderful and caring people at Almonte Country Haven, where he was known as “Cap”. Our family would especially like to thank the amazing and dedicated Personal Support Workers and Nurses who enriched his life. In addition to providing professional and compassionate care, they were the best to turn on the hockey game or sit and hold his hand, read, play guitar and listen to his jokes!
Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor), on Friday, November 4 from 4 to 8 PM. Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 1060 Baseline Road on Saturday, November 5 at 2 PM.
