Ivan Phillips 2022

Ivan Phillips
It is with great sadness that the family of Ivan Phillips mourns his passing in his 89th year, following a brief battle with pneumonia in Manhattan on Tuesday, November 22, 2022. Beloved husband of Winifred Gorlin Phillips for thirty years. Loving father and father-in-law of Gillian and Luca, James and Heidi. Cherished “Pops” of Charles and Oliver. Predeceased by the mother of his children Lisa Phillips.
Ivan was born in Montreal, Canada on May 10,1934, the son of the late Honorable Lazarus Phillips Q.C.O.B.E and the late Rosalie Phillips. He attended Selwyn House School in Montreal (1950), Deerfield Academy (1952) Yale University (B.A 1956) and McGill Law School (B.C.L. 1959). He was a long-standing partner of the Canadian Law Firm Phillips & Vineberg (Davies).
His interest in art and art history began in 1952, and he became actively involved with his brother Neil F. Phillips in the creation and growth of the Phillips Family Collection. His passion for collecting, and the spirit and scope of his knowledge was respected by the academic community. He generously shared his collection with major museums throughout the world. Ivan lit up rooms with his remarkable sense of humor and exciting art anecdotes. He assembled what is reputed to be one of the finest private collections of 18th century French color prints. He assisted in the curation of the 2004 exhibition of French Color Prints for the National Gallery in Washington, D.C
