Gary Smith
1942-2022
With his loving family by his side, Gary James Henry Smith passed away
at the Edmundston Regional Hospital on September 17, 2022 at the age
of 80.
Gary is survived by his loving wife of 57 years and best friend,
Wilberta (Merrithew) Smith; his children, Kevin Smith (Shelly) of
Fredericton, NB, Trena MacDonald (Darren) of Plaster Rock, NB, Scott
Smith (Danielle) of Chicago, Illinois; five grandchildren, Jordyn
Mockler (Jordon), Brendan MacDonald (Chelsey), Audrey Smith, Declan
Smith, and Madison Smith; one great granddaughter, Olivia Mockler; and
great grandson-to-be MacDonald; his sisters, Sheila Schapelle (Warren)
of Goldsboro, NC, Carol Durepos (Conrad) of Plaster Rock, NB; many
nieces and nephews; and two special girls, Milly and Maggie.
Gary is predeceased by his parents, Allison and Mildred (Fawcett)
Smith; and his mother-in-law, Emma Dube.
Gary was an active member of his community, serving as a member,
trustee and steward of St. Andrew’s United Church, vice chairman of
Tobique Valley Manor Building Committee, president of Tobique Valley
Hospital board, president of Victoria County Snowmobile Club, director
of New Brunswick Federation of Snowmobile Clubs, president of
Victoria-Tobique Liberals Association, member of Plaster Rock Flying
Club and Past Master of Tobique Masonic Lodge F:Am #48.
Gary helped found Tobique View Dairy with his parents and worked there
until 1979. Upon sale of the dairy to Baxter Foods, Gary worked for
Baxter’s until his retirement in 2003.
Gary loved to camp in his travel trailer with Bertie, enjoying a cross
country trip in 2004. He was an avid snowmobiler, enjoying many trips
around the province. He loved to farm, cut, yard and split stove wood
and make special projects in his carpentry/machine shop for his
children and grandchildren. He was obsessed with dogs and had many
four legged friends in his lifetime. He was a man of many talents, who
could design and create almost anything.
Respecting Gary’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral. A
private graveside service will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to extend sincere appreciation to the ICU staff at
Edmundston Hospital for Gary’s exceptional care.
In lieu of flowers, donations made to St. Andrew’s United Church or
the SPCA would be appreciated by the family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Brunswick Funeral Home,
Perth-Andover, NB.
