ELGIN CLEARY
1925 – 2022
Peacefully at Wellington House LTC on April 15, 2022 with family at his side. Beloved husband for 63 years of the late Lorraine Cleary (2019). Loving father of David (Jan Chapman), Douglas (Mary Whalen) and Paul (Sarah). Very proud grandfather of Ian & Daniel (Jenine Young); Conor (Morgan Anna Reed), Bridget (Andrew de Jong), Samuel (Kirsten), Fiona, & Aiden; Meagan (Helder Brum), Graham (Rhiannan Agostinho), & Aaron (Jeannine Wilson). Great grandfather of Oliver & Emmett Cleary-Brace, Ailbe Cleary-Brum; Jude & Alfie Agostinho-Cleary; and Ruthann & Jake de Jong. Predeceased by parents Kedith and Frederick Cleary; siblings Marguerite Brand, Milburn, Howard, Edna Williams and Wilma. Survived by Eleanor Burgess and Willis (Hilda). Elgin was the fifth generation to own and operate the current seventh generation Cleary family farm in Spencerville, and spent his whole life on the farm except when he volunteered for the army near the end of World War II. The war ended just as he finished basic training, and as they needed men on the farm more then in the army, he returned home. Elgin volunteered on many agricultural committees such as the Grenville Federation of Agriculture, Grenville Milk Board, Farm Labour Pool and Soil & Crop. He had a strong faith and was an active member in the Spencerville United Church and United Church of Canada and traveled to many provincial and international conferences. He enjoyed history, reading, good humour and was a wonderful Grampa and had the best ‘Dad’ and ‘Grampa’ jokes. He loved all cats and dogs and was often seen stopping to pet and talk to them, even if his day was beyond busy. We would like to sincerely thank all the Staff and Volunteers at Wellington House LTC for all their love and care for both Lorraine and Elgin for the past five years. Friends may attend a visitation on the Cleary Family Farm, 3100 Goodin Rd, Spencerville on Friday, April 22 from 3 to 7 p.m. Receiving friends Saturday, April 23 from 10 – 11 a.m. at the Spencerville United Church, 16 Centre Street, with Funeral Service at 11 a.m., due to COVID no reception to follow . The family is also requesting masks be worn at the visitation and at the funeral service. In memory of Elgin’s strong faith and love of all things agricultural, please consider donations to the Spencerville United Church P.O. Box 29, Spencerville, ON, K0E 1X0 or Spencerville Agricultural Society, 22 Ryan Street, P.O. Box 86, Spencerville, ON K0E 1X0 – Tributes, condolences may be made through www.marsdenmclaughlin.com.

  1. I am sorry to hear of your fathers passing. He was a great man whom I admired very much. I doubt if you will remember, but I babysat you three boys many times as well as worked in the summer for your dad.
    My sincerest sympathy.
