In Celebration of
Dawn McNeill
May 11, 1952 –
October 18, 2022
Dawn Janet McNeill (née Ellis) passed away on October 18, 2022 in Burlington, Ontario after a short but fierce battle with cancer.
Dawn was born on May 11, 1952 in Nottingham, England to Leslie Ellis and Jean Ellis (née Ketton), and was one of four siblings. Her brother Martin passed before her, and she was especially close with her two sisters, Lynn and Donna, and their children, Emma, James, and Emily.
Dawn was the first in her family to attend university and completed an undergraduate degree in Economics and a graduate degree in Social Work at the University of Manchester in England. Dawn immigrated to Canada at the age of 23, choosing Calgary as her city because she didn’t know anyone there, speaking to her courage.
Working in the oil industry, she met Dan McNeill, who would become her husband in 1984. They went on to have three children: Kristen, David, and Suzanne. She was also very close to David’s partner, Shaney, who has been part of the family for more than a decade. Dawn was extremely devoted to her role as a mother and a caregiver. She also prioritized volunteer work throughout her life, offering her time to causes as diverse as Meals on Wheels, elementary school bookkeeping, and audio-recording academic textbooks for visually impaired students.
Dawn loved travel and traveled extensively on her own; with Dan and with the entire family. Some especially meaningful trips include Paris with Dan and the kids, New Zealand with a close friend, and long trips to the UK every year. She loved to learn and took many continuing education courses in history, psychology, and other subjects. She loved chocolate, watching British murder mysteries, tennis, and taking long walks.
She will be missed by her friends and family all over the world.
