Obituary of Christine Edna Backhaus (née Donlevy)

Christine Edna Backhaus (née Donlevy), who appreciated the joys and beauty of the world, devoting her life to service of others, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 of brain cancer at the age of 75 years.
Born and raised in Calgary with her seven siblings, Chris was a passionate intellectual. She specialized in research, was celebrated at the Legislature and was the head Librarian in Camrose. She met the love of her life, Wilf Backhaus, at the University of Calgary. They lived in Kingston, ON, then Edmonton, AB, where their two children were born. Chris and Wilf moved to Camrose to raise their children and eventually moved back to Calgary.
A perpetual volunteer, Chris was involved in leading groups at church, girl guides, SCA, CWL, Camrose Arts Society, PEO, and Library tours. Chris was encouraging, passionate, well-read, kind and lived with compassion and selflessness. She was a patron of the arts, an expert gardener, design and history buff, traveler and cook.
Christine was predeceased by her parents, Leo and Evelyn; siblings, Patrick, Catherine, and Leo; and her partner Wilf. She is survived by her son Brian, daughter Marie-Claire (Kyle); and her beloved grandchildren, Robin and Wil; and siblings, Maureen, Teresa, Mary and Marguerite.
Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael Catholic Community (800 – 85th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. Gravesite service immediately after at St Mary’s Cemetery. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to a charity of your choice, or you can volunteer with an organization you are passionate about. Chris would be proud!
